Parallel Branches

Parallel branches are separate conductive paths connected between the same two nodes in an electrical circuit, allowing current to divide among multiple loads. Because each branch shares the same voltage, the current in each path is determined by its impedance, and the total current equals the sum of branch currents according to Kirchhoff’s current law. This arrangement lets devices operate independently, so one branch can continue functioning if another is opened, provided the circuit and supply remain suitable. Engineers use parallel branches in power distribution, lighting systems, resistor networks, and electronic circuits to control load behavior, improve reliability, and achieve required voltage and current characteristics.

In this video, we describe a qualitative spectrophotometric assay to determine the extent of branching in a glycogen sample with an uncharacterized structure. Comparing the absorbance maxima of the uncharacterized sample with that of polysaccharides with known branched structures indicates the presence of branching in the uncharacterized sample.

Series and Parallel Resistors

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

Financial accounting is essential for recording and reporting an organization's financial transactions. Statements like the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement provide a clear picture of the financial position. These reports are mainly used by external stakeholders such as investors, creditors, regulatory authorities, and tax officials to make informed decisions. The importance of financial accounting lies in its ability to ensure transparency, compliance with legal...

The brain processes sensory information rapidly due to parallel processing, which involves sending data across multiple neural pathways at the same time. This method allows the brain to manage various sensory qualities, such as shapes, colors, movements, and locations, all concurrently. For instance, when observing a forest landscape, the brain simultaneously processes the movement of leaves, the shapes of trees, the depth between them, and the various shades of green. This enables a quick and...

The parallel RLC circuit is an arrangement where the resistor (R), inductor (L), and capacitor (C) are all connected to the same nodes and, as a result, share the same voltage across them. The parallel RLC circuit is analyzed in terms of admittance (Y), which reflects the ease with which current can flow. The admittance is given by: Resonance in a parallel RLC circuit occurs when the net reactance is zero, meaning the capacitive and inductive effects cancel each other out. This condition is...
