Particle Type Testing

Particle type testing is the systematic identification and classification of particles in a material based on properties such as size, shape, composition, or physical behavior. In engineering laboratories, analysts measure or separate particles and compare observations with reference criteria, using methods suited to the material and the investigation. Results can reveal contamination, wear debris, agglomeration, or changes in a powder or suspension, supporting quality control and failure analysis. Particle type testing also helps engineers evaluate manufacturing processes, filtration systems, environmental samples, and material performance, enabling more reliable designs and informed decisions about safety, processing, and maintenance.

Types of Hypothesis Testing

2023

There are three types of hypothesis tests: right-tailed, left-tailed, and two-tailed. When the null and alternative hypotheses are stated, it is observed that the null hypothesis is a neutral statement against which the alternative hypothesis is tested. The alternative hypothesis is a claim that instead has a certain direction. If the null hypothesis claims that p = 0.5, the alternative hypothesis would be an opposing statement to this and can be put either p > 0.5, p < 0.5, or p ≠ 0.5.

A recently developed novel particle agglutination (PA) assay utilizing virus receptor molecule allowed a rapid and easy identification of poliovirus (PV). In this article, we will show the procedure for the PA assay for PV identification.

Subatomic Particles

Dalton was only partially correct about the particles that make up matter. All matter is composed of atoms, and atoms are composed of three smaller subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. These three particles account for the mass and the charge of an atom. The Discovery of the Electron The first clue about the subatomic structure came at the end of the 19th century when J.J. Thomson discovered the electron using a cathode ray tube. This apparatus consisted of a sealed glass...

(2016).This video demonstrates the step-by-step process for concentrating and purifying lentiviral particles from a mixed suspension containing host cell debris. The procedure utilizes centrifugation, filtration, and PEG-salt precipitation to isolate viral particles while removing soluble impurities. The final product is resuspended in a...

Tests of Hardened Concrete in Tension

Source: Roberto Leon, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA In a previous laboratory focused on concrete in compression, we observed that concrete can withstand very large stresses under uniaxial compressive forces. However, the failures observed were not compressive failures but failures along shear planes where maximum tensile forces occur. Thus, it is important to understand the behavior of concrete in tension and particularly its maximum strength...
