Simple Machine

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the magnitude or direction of a force, making work easier to perform. It operates through principles such as leverage, inclined motion, or rotational transfer, allowing a smaller input force to move a load through a greater distance; common types include the lever, wheel and axle, pulley, inclined plane, wedge, and screw. In engineering, simple machines provide the foundational elements of complex mechanisms used to lift, cut, fasten, transport, and control loads. Studying their force relationships and mechanical advantage helps engineers design efficient systems while recognizing that reduced effort generally requires increased input distance.

AC Synchronous Machine Characterization

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

Distillation of a Miscible Mixture Some liquids will evaporate entirely over time if left in an open container at room temperature. However, this evaporation process can be significantly accelerated if the liquid is heated. As the liquid is heated, the molecules within it gain the energy to escape the liquid phase and transition into the gas phase in the form of bubbles. This phenomenon is called boiling. Vapor Pressure Consider a closed container of liquid. Initially, some of this liquid...

Source: Lara Al Hariri and Ahmed Basabrain at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, MA, USA Simple DistillationExpand In this lab, you will use simple distillation to separate a mixture of cyclohexane and toluene. Before you start the lab, put on the appropriate personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, safety goggles, and gloves. This experiment must be conducted in a hood. Assemble the distillation apparatus. Refer to the example set up that has been prepared...

Machines are complex structures consisting of movable, pin-connected multi-force members that work together to transmit forces. One example of a machine is the cutting plier, which is used to cut wires by applying forces to its handles. When equal and opposite forces are exerted on the handles of the cutting plier, they cause the cutting edges to come together and apply equal and opposite reaction forces on the wire, which are greater than the applied forces. A free-body diagram of the...
