Small Molecular Organics

Small molecular organics are carbon-based compounds composed of relatively few atoms, distinguished from polymers and other macromolecular materials by their low molecular size and discrete structures. Their behavior arises from functional groups and molecular architecture, which control properties such as polarity, solubility, reactivity, electronic behavior, and intermolecular interactions. In engineering, these compounds serve as solvents, reagents, additives, fuels, pharmaceuticals, and building blocks for advanced materials; understanding how structure governs performance supports molecular design, process optimization, and selection of safer, more efficient chemicals. Their tunable chemistry also enables applications in coatings, electronics, catalysis, and energy-related technologies.

2016

Microbial populations contain substantial cell heterogeneity, which can dictate overall behavior. Molecular probe analysis through flow cytometry can determine physiological states of cells, however its application varies between species. This study provides a protocol to accurately determine cell mortality within a cyanobacterium population, without underestimating or recording false positive results.

Molecular Cloning

2023

Molecular cloning is a set of methods, which are used to insert recombinant DNA into a vector - a carrier of DNA molecules that will replicate recombinant DNA fragments in host organisms. The DNA fragment, which may be a gene, can be isolated from a prokaryotic or eukaryotic specimen. Following isolation of the fragment of interest, or insert, both the vector and insert must be cut with restriction enzymes and purified. The purified pieces are joined together though a technique called...

We report a simple method for fabricating an ultrahigh density array of vertically ordered small-molecular organic nanowires. This method allows for synthesis of complex heterostructured hybrid nanowire geometries, which can be inexpensively grown on arbitrary substrates. These structures have potential applications in organic electronics, optoelectronics, chemical sensing, photovoltaics and spintronics.

Here we report the generation of Tre recombinase through directed, molecular evolution. Tre recombinase recognizes a pre-defined target sequence within the LTR sequences of the HIV-1 provirus, resulting in the excision and eradication of the provirus from infected human cells. While still in its infancy, directed molecular evolution will allow the creation of custom enzymes that will serve as tools of molecular surgery and molecular medicine.
