U.s. Customary System

The U.S. Customary System is a measurement system used primarily in the United States, where quantities such as length, mass, force, volume, and temperature are expressed with units including inches, feet, pounds, gallons, and degrees Fahrenheit. It works through defined relationships among units and conversion factors; for example, 12 inches make a foot, while engineers use dimensional analysis to combine measurements and verify calculation consistency. In engineering, the system remains important for construction, manufacturing, product design, and infrastructure that follow U.S. standards, while accurate conversion to the International System of Units supports collaboration, analysis, and global compatibility.

Measuring the impacts of environmental contaminants on fish behavior is often subjective and challenging particularly when dealing with sublethal endpoints. We describe methods including video technology to quantify swimming behavior of early life stage white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) during and after 96 hr acute exposures to various concentrations of copper.

A computational framework was developed to automatically reconstruct virtual scenes comprising 3D avatars of soldiers using image and/or video data. The virtual scenes help estimate blast overpressure exposure during weapon training. The tool facilitates a realistic representation of human posture in blast exposure simulations in various scenarios.

Beech bark disease is initiated by feeding activities of the beech scale insect that create fungal entry points in the bark. Trees that are resistant to the scale insect are also disease resistant. Here we present the protocol we have developed to screen individual beech trees for beech scale resistance.
