Fold-thrust Belt

A fold-thrust belt is a broad zone of deformed sedimentary rocks formed where tectonic plates converge, making it important for understanding mountain building and Earth’s changing surface environment. Compression shortens and thickens the crust by folding rock layers and moving them along low-angle thrust faults, often producing imbricate fault systems and adjacent foreland basins. These structures influence regional topography, drainage, erosion, sediment transport, and the distribution of groundwater and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Studying fold-thrust belts helps researchers reconstruct tectonic history, assess earthquake and landslide hazards, and evaluate how geological processes shape environmental conditions over time.

Propulsion and Thrust

Source: Alexander S Rattner; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Aircraft, rockets, and ships produce propulsion by accelerating surrounding fluid or high temperature combustion products to high velocity. Because of the principle of conservation of momentum, the increased fluid velocity results in an effective thrust force on the vehicle. The thrust capabilities of propulsion systems are often measured with static thrust tests.

Multicopter Aerodynamics: Characterizing Thrust on a Hexacopter

Source: Prashin Sharma and Ella M. Atkins, Department of Aerospace Engineering, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI Multicopters are becoming popular for a variety of hobby and commercial applications. They are commonly available as quadcopter (four thrusters), hexacopter (six thrusters), and octocopter (eight thrusters) configurations. Here, we describe an experimental process to characterize the multicopter performance. A modular small hexacopter platform providing propulsion unit...

Fabrication and Operation of a Nano-Optical Conveyor Belt

2015

The scalability and resolution of conventional optical manipulation techniques are limited by diffraction. We circumvent the diffraction limit and describe a method of optically transporting nanoparticles across a chip using a gold surface patterned with a path of closely spaced C-shaped plasmonic resonators.

Frictional Forces on Flat Belts

Flat belts are commonly used in various industrial applications for transmitting power from one pulley to another. When a flat belt is wrapped around a set of pulleys, it experiences different tensions at the driving pulley ends due to the friction between the belt and pulley surface. When the pulley moves in a counterclockwise direction, the tension T2 on the opposite side of the pulley where the belt is moving away from is higher than the tension T1 on the side where the belt is moving...

Using a Split-belt Treadmill to Evaluate Generalization of Human Locomotor Adaptation

2017

We describe a protocol for investigating human locomotor adaptation using the split-belt treadmill, which has two belts that can drive each leg at a different speed. We specifically focus on a paradigm designed to test the generalization of adapted locomotor patterns to different walking contexts (e.g., gait speeds, walking environments).
