GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) is a framework of accounting standards, conventions, and procedures used primarily in the United States to prepare consistent, transparent financial statements and support informed decisions. It guides how organizations recognize, measure, classify, and disclose transactions, often through accrual accounting, which records economic activity when it occurs rather than only when cash changes hands, while requiring consistent presentation and material disclosures. Companies, auditors, investors, lenders, and regulators use GAAP to improve comparability across reporting periods and businesses, evaluate financial performance and position, and strengthen accountability as financial reporting practices evolve.
