Periodic Labour Force Survey

The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) is India’s official statistical program for measuring employment, unemployment, labour-force participation, and related characteristics of the working population. It uses a nationally representative sample of households and collects information on people’s usual activity status and current weekly or daily work status, enabling estimates across rural and urban areas and different time periods. In macroeconomics, PLFS data helps assess labour-market conditions, track structural changes in employment, evaluate economic policy, and understand links between work, income, productivity, and broader economic growth. Its indicators also support comparisons across demographic groups, sectors, and regions.
