Acellular Assays

Acellular assays are laboratory tests that measure biological activity using isolated molecules, enzymes, receptors, or other cell-free components rather than intact cells. They work by combining a target with a test substance under controlled conditions and detecting changes such as binding, enzyme activity, signal production, or molecular interaction through a measurable readout. In medicine, acellular assays support drug discovery, pharmacological screening, biomarker analysis, and diagnostic development by providing focused, reproducible measurements of specific biological processes. Their defined experimental systems can help identify candidate therapies and clarify mechanisms before testing in cellular or organism-based models.
