Bone Volume Deficiency

Bone volume deficiency is a reduction in the amount of bone available to support normal anatomy, function, or medical reconstruction, and it can limit healing and implant placement. It develops when bone resorption exceeds formation, often after tooth loss, trauma, infection, disease, or prolonged disuse, resulting in reduced height, width, or density. Clinicians assess the defect through examination and imaging, then may use bone grafting, guided bone regeneration, or other reconstructive approaches to restore structural volume. Understanding the underlying cause and local tissue conditions helps guide treatment planning in oral surgery, orthopedics, and regenerative medicine while improving the feasibility and stability of subsequent interventions.
