Death Notification Skills

Death notification skills are the communication techniques clinicians use to tell patients’ families or representatives that a person has died, an essential part of compassionate medical practice. Effective notification involves preparing for the conversation, confirming the facts, using direct and understandable language, allowing silence and emotional responses, and checking what the recipient understands; clinicians should also explain immediate practical steps and available support. In medicine, these skills help professionals communicate accurately while respecting grief, cultural differences, privacy, and the circumstances of death. Training can strengthen confidence, reduce avoidable misunderstandings, and support families and healthcare teams during an emotionally difficult transition.

An Introduction to Cell Death

2023

Necrosis, apoptosis, and autophagic cell death are all manners in which cells can die, and these mechanisms can be induced by different stimuli, such as cell injury, low nutrient levels, or signaling proteins. Whereas necrosis is considered to be an “accidental” or unexpected form of cell death, evidence exists that apoptosis and autophagy are both programmed and “planned” by cells. In this introductory video, JoVE highlights key discoveries pertaining to cell death, including recent work done...

Two-Dimensional Graphs Some chemistry experiments take the form of directly changing one property of the system that you are studying otherwise known as the independent variable, like temperature, and measuring the effects on another property, otherwise known as the dependent variable, like volume. Once the data have been collected, the interaction between the two parameters must be quantified — or converted into a form that can be evaluated — and compared to other relationships.

Neuronal Death Assay to Evaluate Cell Death in Ex Vivo Epilepsy Model

This video demonstrates the technique of assessing neuronal death in rhinal cortex-hippocampus organotypic slices. Neuronal death occurs via evolving epileptic seizures — resembling in vivo epilepsy — and is detected through dual-staining of the dead cells using propidium iodide and immunofluorescence.

Using Virtual Reality to Transfer Motor Skill Knowledge from One Hand to Another

We describe a novel virtual-reality based setup which exploits voluntary control of one hand to improve motor-skill performance in the other (non-trained) hand. This is achieved by providing real-time movement-based sensory feedback as if the non-trained hand is moving. This new approach may be used to enhance rehabilitation of patients with unilateral hemiparesis.
