Digital Imaging

Digital imaging is the capture, conversion, storage, and display of visual information as numerical data, enabling precise analysis and rapid sharing in medicine. Imaging detectors measure signals such as transmitted X-rays, magnetic resonance responses, or reflected ultrasound, then convert them into pixels or three-dimensional voxels that software can enhance, reconstruct, and quantify. These digital images support disease detection, diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical and image-guided procedures, and monitoring of response over time. Standardized data formats and computational tools also facilitate electronic records, remote consultation, and research, while advances in artificial intelligence increasingly assist segmentation, pattern recognition, and clinical decision-making.
