Ethanol Spray

Ethanol spray is a liquid formulation that disperses ethanol as fine droplets for topical antisepsis, surface disinfection, or delivery of alcohol-based medicines, making it a practical tool for reducing microbial contamination. Its antimicrobial action occurs when ethanol penetrates microbial cells and disrupts lipid membranes while denaturing proteins; effectiveness depends on concentration, contact time, coverage, and evaporation. In medicine, ethanol sprays may support hand and skin hygiene, prepare surfaces before procedures, and help control transmission of infectious agents when used according to product instructions. Proper formulation and application are important because ethanol is flammable and can irritate damaged skin or mucous membranes.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

We present protocols to be used in the measurement of spray droplet size from agricultural nozzles used in both aerial and ground based agrochemical applications. These methods presented were developed to provide consistent and repeatable droplet size data both inter- and intra-laboratory, when using laser diffraction systems.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...

Topical Airway Anesthesia for Awake-endoscopic Intubation Using the Spray-as-you-go Technique with High Oxygen Flow

The topical anesthetic lidocaine was atomized using a high oxygen flow through the working channel of a flexible intubating endoscope to achieve topical airway anesthesia for awake endotracheal intubation. We prefer this modified spray-as-you-go technique for endoscopic intubation to classical bolus application because of higher patient satisfaction and better compliance.
