Offspring Development

Offspring development is the biological process through which a fertilized egg becomes a mature individual, encompassing embryonic, fetal, and postnatal growth. It proceeds through coordinated cell division, differentiation, migration, and tissue organization, guided by genetic programs and influenced by signals from the surrounding environment. In medicine, understanding these stages supports prenatal assessment, identification of developmental abnormalities, and evaluation of how maternal health, nutrition, medications, and environmental exposures affect outcomes. This knowledge also informs reproductive care, neonatal medicine, developmental disorder research, and strategies for improving lifelong health.

Drosophila Development and Reproduction

2023

One of the many reasons that make Drosophila an extremely valuable organism is that the molecular, cellular, and genetic foundations of development are highly conserved between flies and higher eukaryotes such as humans. Drosophila progress through several developmental stages in a process known as the life cycle and each stage provides a unique platform for developmental research. This video introduces each stage of the Drosophila life cycle and details the physical characteristics and major...

Nematode Synchronization: A Method to Obtain Populations of Worms in Identical Stages of Development

2023

In this video, we show a method of producing a developmentally synchronized population of sterile adult C. elegans. The example protocol synchronizes worms to study oxygen consumption rates in live animals.

Sustainable Development

As the human population continues to grow and use resources, we must be mindful of our planet’s natural limits. Sustainable development provides a pathway to maintain and improve human life now while also ensuring that future generations will have the resources that they need. The long-term success of sustainability efforts rests on understanding the interplay between human actions and ecological systems. The oceans are one important focus of global conservation efforts. Overfishing,...

Development of the Chick

2023

The chicken embryo (Gallus gallus domesticus) provides an economical and accessible model for developmental biology research. Chicks develop rapidly and are amenable to genetic and physiological manipulations, allowing researchers to investigate developmental pathways down to the cell and molecular levels. This video review of chick development begins by describing the process of egg fertilization and formation within the chicken reproductive tract. Next, the most commonly used chick staging...
