Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease in which blood glucose remains elevated because the body becomes resistant to insulin and, over time, may produce less of it. Insulin normally helps cells take up glucose from the blood, but insulin resistance reduces this response, prompting the pancreas to increase insulin secretion until glucose regulation fails. The condition is assessed through blood-glucose testing and managed with nutrition, physical activity, weight management, medicines, and, when needed, insulin. Understanding its mechanisms supports prevention and treatment while reducing the risk of complications affecting the cardiovascular system, kidneys, eyes, and nerves.

Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

2024

Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...
