Cognitive Task

A cognitive task is a structured activity designed to engage and measure mental processes such as perception, attention, memory, language, or decision-making. In neuroscience, researchers present controlled stimuli or instructions and analyze behavioral responses, including accuracy, reaction time, and task-related changes in brain activity, to connect performance with underlying neural systems. Cognitive tasks support the study of brain function, cognition, and neurological disorders, while also helping evaluate changes associated with development, aging, learning, or treatment. Careful task design and standardized conditions improve the reliability and interpretability of these measurements.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Monitoring brain activity outside the lab without physical constraints presents methodological challenges. A fiberless, wearable functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) system was used to measure brain activity during an ecological prospective memory task. It was demonstrated that this system could be used to monitor brain activity during non-lab based experiments.

2025

This protocol describes the use of physiological indicators to measure variations in cognitive load across different task difficulty levels in human-AI collaborative tasks. The findings suggest that people adapt their decision-making processes according to task difficulty, thereby reflecting different levels of cognitive load.
