Duke Immersive Virtual Environment

The Duke Immersive Virtual Environment (DiVE) is a room-sized virtual reality system that surrounds users with computer-generated three-dimensional scenes, enabling controlled study of perception, behavior, and brain function. It works by projecting synchronized stereoscopic images onto surrounding screens while tracking the user’s head or body position, allowing the visual scene to update with natural movement and perspective. In neuroscience, DiVE supports experiments on spatial navigation, sensory integration, learning, and motor responses in realistic yet reproducible environments. By combining experimental control with immersive interaction, it helps researchers connect behavior to neural mechanisms and evaluate how the brain constructs and responds to the surrounding world.

Classical fear conditioning paradigm was adapted for human participants in a fully immersive virtual reality setting. Using a discrimination paradigm, conditioned fear, cue and context memory retention, and extinction was measured with skin conductance response to dynamic virtual snakes and spiders (the conditioned stimuli) in two distinct virtual contexts.
