Electromyographic Blink Activity

Electromyographic blink activity is the electrical signal associated with activation of the muscles that close the eyelids, providing a measurable window into neural control of blinking. In neuroscience, surface electrodes placed over the orbicularis oculi detect changes in muscle activity, allowing researchers to measure blink onset, amplitude, duration, and response latency during spontaneous or stimulus-evoked blinks. These measurements help characterize sensorimotor pathways, protective blink reflexes, startle responses, attention, and arousal. They also support research on motor control and neurological dysfunction by revealing altered timing or muscle recruitment patterns.

The Attentional Blink

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In order for recognition of a certain stimulus to take place, visual attention needs to be directed towards said stimulus. To the earliest parts of the visual system, objects are not objects, they are collections of visual features-lines, corners, changes in texture, color, and light. Attention is the resource that is necessary for later processing in order to recognize what a given bundle of features adds up to. This makes...
