Nmj Terminal Measurement

NMJ terminal measurement is the quantitative assessment of neuromuscular junction nerve terminals, providing evidence of how motor neurons communicate with skeletal muscle. It typically examines presynaptic terminal structure and function by measuring features such as terminal size, branching, synaptic organization, or responses to nerve stimulation, which reflect calcium-dependent neurotransmitter release and postsynaptic muscle activation. In neuroscience, these measurements help characterize synaptic development, maintenance, and remodeling, while revealing changes associated with neurodegeneration, nerve injury, aging, or experimental treatments. Standardized terminal measurements therefore support comparisons across models and strengthen investigations of neuromuscular connectivity and synaptic dysfunction.

Here we describe electrophysiological methods for measuring synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction of Drosophila larva. Evoked release is initiated artificially by stimulating the motor neuron axons, and transmission through the NMJ can be measured by the postsynaptic response evoked in the muscle.
