Stereology Software

Stereology software supports the quantitative analysis of three-dimensional structures from two-dimensional biological images, helping researchers estimate cell numbers, volumes, lengths, and other spatial properties with reduced sampling bias. In neuroscience, these programs guide systematic random sampling, generate counting frames or grids, and apply methods such as the optical disector and Cavalieri principle to convert sampled observations into population estimates. By standardizing image analysis and recording sampling parameters, stereology software improves the reproducibility of studies involving neurons, glial cells, brain regions, and pathological tissue. It is used to assess neuroanatomical changes, evaluate disease models, and measure outcomes in experimental therapies.

Neural control and cognitive processes can be studied through eye movements. The VisualEyes software allows an operator to program stimuli on two computer screens independently using a simple, custom scripting language. The system can stimulate tandem eye movements (saccades and smooth pursuit) or opposing eye movements (vergence) or any combination.

Stereological Estimation of Cholinergic Fiber Length in the Nucleus Basalis of Meynert of the Mouse Brain

2020

Neuronal fiber length within a three-dimensional structure of a brain region is a reliable parameter to quantify specific neuronal structural integrity or degeneration. This article details a stereological quantification method to measure cholinergic fiber length within the nucleus basalis of Meynert in mice as an example.
