Plasma Metabolism

Plasma metabolism is the biochemical transformation of drugs and other circulating compounds within blood plasma, an important determinant of their concentration, duration, and effects. It occurs when plasma enzymes and other reactive components modify molecules through processes such as hydrolysis or oxidation, producing metabolites that may be active, inactive, or more readily eliminated. In pharmacology, evaluating plasma metabolism helps distinguish changes occurring in the bloodstream from hepatic or tissue metabolism, supports interpretation of pharmacokinetic profiles, and informs drug stability, bioavailability, dosing, and toxicity assessments. These analyses also guide the design of compounds with predictable persistence and therapeutic activity.
