Energy Matter

Energy and matter are fundamental aspects of the physical universe, describing the capacity for change and the substance that makes up objects, fields, and particles. In physics, they are linked by conservation laws and mass–energy equivalence: energy can transfer or transform between kinetic, thermal, chemical, electromagnetic, and nuclear forms, while matter can convert to energy under processes such as nuclear reactions. Understanding this relationship explains motion, temperature, radiation, chemical interactions, and the behavior of stars. It also supports applications ranging from power generation and materials research to particle physics, astrophysics, and emerging energy technologies.

Classifying Matter by State

Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. Matter is all around us; the air, water, soil, mountains, even our bodies are all examples of matter. Matter is divided into three states — solid, liquid, and gas — that are commonly found on earth. The fourth state of matter, plasma, occurs naturally in the interiors of stars. Solids are characterized by a definite shape and volume. In a solid, the particles (atoms or...

Matter: Pure Substances and Mixtures According to its composition, the matter can be classified into two broad categories — pure substances and mixtures. A pure substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition throughout with uniform properties. For example, any sample of sucrose has the same composition and same physical properties, such as melting point, color, and sweetness, regardless of the source from which it is isolated. A mixture is composed of two or more types of...

Chemical reactions, such as those that occur when you light a match, involve changes in energy as well as matter. Chemical changes and their accompanying changes in energy are important parts of everyday life. The macronutrients in food undergo metabolic reactions that provide the energy to keep bodies functioning. A variety of fuels (gasoline, natural gas, coal) is burned to produce energy for transportation, heating, and the generation of electricity. Industrial chemical reactions use...

Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter

The characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another are called properties. Physical Properties of Matter A physical property is a characteristic of matter that is not associated with a change in its chemical composition. Familiar examples of physical properties include density, color, hardness, melting and boiling points, and electrical conductivity. We can observe some physical properties, such as density and color, without changing the physical state of the matter...

The Food Chain Energy is one of the most important abiotic factors in an ecosystem and organisms in an ecosystem are connected by the flow of energy and matter among one another. Since energy can be neither created nor destroyed, it can only change form or be transferred to the next organism in a food chain. For example, every time a cow grazes on grass or an osprey hunts and consumes fish, energy is transferred from the consumed organism to the consumer. Each of these interactions in a food...
