Solar Plasma

Solar plasma is the hot, electrically charged gas that makes up most of the Sun and extends through the heliosphere, where its behavior shapes space weather. Because its ions and electrons respond to electromagnetic fields, solar plasma flows and evolves through processes described by magnetohydrodynamics, including convection, wave propagation, and magnetic reconnection. These processes power solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and the solar wind, while transporting energy and particles throughout the solar system. Studying solar plasma helps physicists understand stellar activity, predict disturbances that affect satellites and communications, and investigate fundamental plasma behavior under extreme temperatures and magnetic fields.

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Today's modern world requires the use of a large amount of energy. While we harness energy from fossil fuels such as coal and oil, these sources are nonrenewable and thus the supply is limited. To maintain our global lifestyle, we must extract energy from renewable sources. The most promising renewable source, in terms of abundance, is the sun, which provides us with more than enough solar energy to fully fuel our...

2018

Two 'Combined Stress test with in situ measurement' setups, which allow real-time monitoring of accelerated degradation of solar cells and modules, were designed and constructed. These setups allow the simultaneous use of humidity, temperature, electrical biases, and illumination as independently controlled stress factors. The setups and various experiments executed are presented.
