Mental Categories

Mental categories are cognitive groupings that organize people, objects, events, or ideas according to shared features, helping individuals interpret experience and make efficient judgments. In psychology, categorization involves comparing new information with stored mental representations, such as prototypes, exemplars, or schemas, and assigning it to a meaningful group; context and prior knowledge can shape these decisions. Studying mental categories clarifies how concepts develop, how language and memory structure knowledge, and why people sometimes form stereotypes or make biased judgments. This research informs education, clinical assessment, decision-making, and models of human cognition.

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville It might be possible for the human brain to keep track of each individual person, place, or thing encountered, but that would be a very inefficient use of time and cognitive resources. Instead, humans develop categories. Categories are mental representations of real things that can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, individuals can use the perceptual features of animals to place them into a given...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Visual mental imagery refers to the ability to conjure images in one’s mind’s eye. This allows people to process visual material above and beyond the constraints of a current point-of-view; for example, a person could imagine, using their mind’s eye, how something might look in a different color, or what it would look like if it were made from a different material or rotated and seen from a different perspective. Mental imagery...

Understanding how services can be categorized is crucial for businesses, as it can help them manage and market their offerings more effectively. Beyond the fundamental distinction between people-based and equipment-based services, which focuses on the delivery method, services are also classified based on how they process people, possessions, or information. This understanding can guide businesses' service design, customer interaction strategies, and resource allocation. For example,...

Equilibrium is a crucial concept in physics, enabling us to understand how forces interact with bodies to produce no or constant motion. In two-dimensional equilibrium, force systems can be classified into different categories based on their characteristics. One of the categories of equilibrium is collinear equilibrium, which involves forces acting along a straight line. This type of equilibrium requires only one force equation in the direction of the forces, as the other equations are...
