Secondo l'ipotesi, gli individui mirano a mantenere un consumo stabile per tutta la vita, regolando il loro comportamento di risparmio e spesa nelle diverse fasi.
Ad esempio, qualcuno come Lisa può prendere in prestito durante la sua carriera iniziale quando il reddito è basso, risparmiare in modo significativo nei suoi anni di massimo guadagno e successivamente utilizzare questi risparmi durante la pensione per sostenere uno stile di vita coerente.
