The bonus method is an adjustment made to partners’ capital accounts when a new partner joins a firm. It applies when the new partner’s capital does not match their agreed ownership share due to intangible factors like the business's goodwill or the new partner's specialized expertise. The difference is treated as a bonus in the partners’ capital accounts.
If the new partner brings in more capital than their share entitles them to, the excess is a bonus credited to the existing partners’ capital accounts.
Consider Sam and John are equal partners with a total capital of two hundred thousand dollars.
Harry joins by investing one hundred and thirty thousand dollars for a one-third share.
After his admission, the total capital becomes three hundred and thirty thousand dollars.
Harry’s one-third share entitles him to a capital credit of one hundred and ten thousand dollars.
Since he contributes one hundred and thirty thousand dollars, the excess twenty thousand dollars is a bonus to the existing partners.
This excess is split equally between the existing partners and credited to their capital accounts.
