In un mondo ideale i ricercatori condurrebbero i loro studi in contesti del mondo reale in cui i comportamenti accadono naturalmente. Gli studi psicologici spesso utilizzano campioni di dimensioni superiori rispetto agli studi in altre scienze. Condurre la ricerca in un ambiente realistico è ottimale, ma sfortunatamente non è sempre etico o addirittura pratico. In questo esperimento, un ambiente realistico del ristorante è progettato per consentire al ricercatore di manipolare il modo in cui le recensioni dei ristoranti - positive e negative ? influenzare i partecipanti? comportamento a tavola. Per il gruppo di recensioni positive, ai partecipanti viene chiesto di leggere una critica che si complimenta con il servizio. Al contrario, al gruppo di recensioni negative viene chiesto di leggere una critica che condanna il servizio. Dopo aver letto una delle recensioni, ai partecipanti viene mostrato un video che raffigura uno scenario culinario con un servizio scadente e devono immaginarsi come uno dei commensali e il ricercatore come il cameriere. Una volta terminato il video, ai partecipanti viene consegnato un conto per il pasto immaginato. La variabile dipendente è la quantità di denaro lasciata come mancia. Pertanto, si ipotizza che i partecipanti che leggono la recensione positiva siano più indulgenti nei confronti del servizio scadente e offrano una mancia più alta rispetto ai commensali che leggono la recensione negativa. Per iniziare lo studio, incontra il partecipante alla porta del laboratorio e accoglilo nel ristorante Hawk Villa. Guida tutti i partecipanti attraverso il processo di consenso e discuti il piano generale per la sessione. Dopo che il partecipante ha acconsentito all'esperimento, dagli un portafoglio contenente $ 136,10, divisi in importi specifici di banconote e monete. Dividi casualmente i partecipanti in uno dei due gruppi sperimentali consegnando loro una recensione positiva o negativa. Quando i partecipanti hanno finito di leggere le recensioni, chiedi loro di guardare un video che raffigura una scena di cena. Per concludere l'esperimento, fai un debriefing al partecipante e spiega perché per l'esperimento era necessario simulare un ristorante in laboratorio. Per analizzare i dati, conta prima i soldi che ogni partecipante ha messo nel portafoglio. Sottrai il totale della fattura di $ 44,67 dall'importo che il partecipante ha lasciato per calcolare l'importo della mancia. Quindi, calcola la percentuale di mancia. Per visualizzare i dati, rappresentare graficamente le percentuali medie delle mance per gruppo. Si noti che i partecipanti alla condizione di recensione positiva hanno ricevuto una mancia più alta rispetto a quelli nella condizione di recensione negativa. Ora che hai familiarità con come ottimizzare il realismo all'interno di un ambiente di laboratorio, diamo un'occhiata a come puoi applicare questo approccio ad altre forme di ricerca. I simulatori di guida sono spesso utilizzati in laboratorio per studiare in sicurezza l'abilità di guida in individui con deficit visivi o sotto l'effetto di una sostanza, come l'alcol. Inoltre, i ricercatori possono studiare le abilità di navigazione negli individui esaminando le prestazioni delle attività in un ambiente simulato del mondo reale. Infine, i ricercatori hanno adattato i movimenti di danza per coinvolgere i pazienti che esprimono scarsa mobilità ed equilibrio, come quelli con malattia di Parkinson, e successivamente hanno monitorato i cambiamenti nelle prestazioni motorie. Mundane realism helps lab experiments feel like real life. It is used when researchers want a setting that matches how people normally behave. In some studies, the real world is the best place to observe behavior directly. For example, voting behavior is easier to study by watching people vote. But real-world research is not always ethical or practical.

A lab gives researchers more control over the setting. That control helps them identify the exact variables that may influence an outcome. To make a lab study feel natural, researchers try to improve mundane realism. This means they make the lab experience seem as close to everyday life as possible.

This restaurant study uses a two-group design. It tests whether positive restaurant reviews are linked to how much diners tip. The setup shows how researchers can build a realistic lab situation to study a real behavior. Although the demonstration uses just two participants, one in each condition, the full study used 200 participants. That larger sample included 100 participants per condition and helped support the conclusions.
