Determining the Solubility Rules of Ionic Compounds

1. Metodi generali

<li>Indossare sempre occhiali di sicurezza durante l'esecuzione di esperimenti di analisi qualitativa. I guanti possono anche essere necessari in base ai reagenti utilizzati e ai prodotti formati.</li>
		<li>I metodi adeguati di smaltimento dei rifiuti devono essere seguiti da vicino. I prodotti nocivi possono formarsi quando più reagenti sono combinati in un unico contenitore.</li>

</ol>2. Analisi degli anioni

<li>Fosfato<ol>
<li>Aggiungere una soluzione contenente fosfato, PO43-, ad un'altra soluzione contenente ioni calcio, Ca2+. La formazione di un precipitato bianco indica la formazione di fosfato di calcio, Ca3(PO4)2.</li>

<li>I sali di carbonato sono generalmente insolubili tranne che in presenza di cationi di gruppo 1 e ammonio. Aggiungere qualche goccia di cloruro di calcio, CaCl2,alla soluzione contenente carbonato. In soluzioni con alte concentrazioni di carbonato, si forma un precipitato bianco e indica la possibile formazione di fosfato di calcio, CaCO3. </ol>3. Analisi dei cationi
<ol><li>Tutti i metalli alcalini (gruppo 1) e alcuni metalli alcalino-terrosi (gruppo 2) sono solubili tranne che in condizioni specifiche.</li>

Quando un composto ionico si dissolve, interagisce in modo reversibile con le molecole di solvente e gli ioni si dissociano. Se l'interazione tra uno ione e il nuovo contro-ione è più forte che tra lo ione e le molecole del solvente, sarà più favorevole per il prodotto essere in fase solida. La formazione di prodotto solido dalla soluzione è nota come precipitazione e il solido è chiamato precipitato. Gli ioni possono essere isolati selettivamente dalla soluzione inducendo reazioni con precipitati insolubili. Per analizzare una soluzione per fosfato, preparare prima soluzioni di prova diluite di calcio acquoso, ortomolibdato di ammonio e acido nitrico concentrato. Quindi, mettere 5 ml della soluzione sconosciuta in una provetta. Aggiungere la soluzione di calcio goccia a goccia alla soluzione incognita. La formazione di un precipitato bianco potrebbe indicare la presenza di fosfato di calcio, o carbonato di calcio. Per verificare la presenza di fosfato, aggiungere lentamente acido nitrico alla provetta. La dissoluzione del precipitato indica che si è formato l'idrogeno fosfato. La mancanza di bolle di gas indica che non è presente carbonato, poiché il carbonato avrebbe reagito con l'acido per formare anidride carbonica e acqua. Decantare il surnatante nella seconda provetta. Lavare il cloruro d'argento tre volte con acqua e travasare ogni lavaggio nella seconda provetta. Quindi, aggiungere la soluzione di idrossido di sodio goccia a goccia nella seconda provetta. Si formeranno tre precipitati: idrossido di zinco bianco, idrossido di ferro giallo e idrossido di nichel verde. Continuare ad aggiungere idrossido di sodio fino a quando il composto di zinco bianco solido non si dissolve, formando lo ione zincato solubile. Separare la soluzione di zinco e i composti solidi di nichel e ferro mediante centrifugazione, quindi decantare la soluzione nella terza provetta. Qualitative analysis can be used to identify the ions in an ionic compound and to infer solubility from the products that form. It is a branch of analytical chemistry that uses chemical properties and reactions to determine whether a cation or an anion is present. The same known solubility rules that guide these tests can also be learned by observing the reaction products.

This approach is not usually used in modern industrial chemistry labs, but it is practical in the field because it does not require sophisticated instruments. It also helps students practice ionic reactions and net ionic reactions. Results are organized in a flow chart so observations can be compared and used to reach clear conclusions.

Many cations have similar chemical properties, and many anions do as well. For that reason, the ions must be separated and analyzed carefully. Successful identification also depends on understanding acid-base behavior, ionic equilibria, redox reactions, and pH properties.

Qualitative tests exist for almost every elemental ion and polyatomic ion. The process usually starts by deciding which class of ions is being analyzed, such as cations or anions, elemental or polyatomic ions, and groups or periods. In this experiment, both cations and anions are identified, and the cations include polyatomic ions as well.
