Il nucleo è un organelli legato alla membrana che contiene le istruzioni genetiche di un organismo eucariotico sotto forma di DNA cromosomico. Questo è distinto dal DNA nei mitocondri o cloroplasti che svolgono funzioni specifiche per quegli organelli. Mentre alcune cellule, come i globuli rossi, non hanno un nucleo, e altre, come le cellule muscolari scheletriche, hanno più nuclei, la maggior parte delle cellule eucariotiche possiede un unico nucleo.

Il DNA nel nucleo è avvolto intorno a proteine come gli istoni, creando un complesso di proteine del DNA chiamato cromatina. Quando le cellule non si dividono, ovvero quando si trovano nella parte interfase del ciclo cellulare, la cromatina è organizzata in modo diffuso. Ciò consente un facile accesso al DNA durante il processo di trascrizione quando l'RNA messaggero (mRNA) viene sintetizzato in base al codice del DNA. Quando una cellula eucatotica sta per dividersi, la cromatina si condensa strettamente in cromosomi distinti e lineari. Gli esseri umani hanno 46 cromosomi in totale.

La cromatina è particolarmente concentrata in una regione del nucleo chiamata nucleolo. Il nucleolo è importante per la produzione di ribosomi, che traducono l'mRNA in proteina. Nel nucleo, l'RNA ribosomico viene sintetizzato e combinato con proteine per creare sottounità ribosomiche, che in seguito formano ribosomi funzionanti nel citoplasma della cellula.

The nucleus is the control center of a eukaryotic cell. It is a membrane-bound organelle that contains chromosomal DNA. That DNA helps control gene expression and regulate protein production in the cell.

Not all cellular DNA has the same role. The DNA in mitochondria and chloroplasts supports functions that are specific to those organelles. Inside the nucleus, DNA structure also affects how genes are regulated.

Nuclear DNA is wrapped around proteins called histones. This forms chromatin, a DNA-protein complex. During interphase, when the cell is not dividing, chromatin stays loosely arranged. This open form makes the DNA easier to access during transcription.

When a eukaryotic cell prepares to divide, chromatin changes shape. It condenses into distinct, linear chromosomes. These chromosomes can then be separated into daughter cells.

The nucleus also contains the nucleolus. This is a membrane-less organelle that forms around the chromosomal loci for ribosomal RNA, or rRNA. The nucleolus is the site where rRNA is made and ribosomal subunits are assembled. These subunits leave the nucleus and later combine to form functional ribosomes.

Other nuclear bodies are found in the nucleus as well. These include Cajal bodies, speckles, and paraspeckles. They help organize the nuclear space and create separate sites for specific biological reactions. Their membrane-less structure also allows contents to move more easily with the nucleoplasm.
