Tissues

Multicellular organisms are made up of groups of cells called tissues. Tissues in both plants and animals are made of cells that share similar structures and perform specific functions.In animals, tissues can be classified into four main types: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, such as the surface of the skin and the lining of internal cavities. Some epithelial tissues form protective barriers, while others allow the exchange or absorption of nutrients.Epithelial tissues also form specialized structures called glands, which release secretory substances.The cells of epithelial tissues are tightly packed in either a single layer, called simple epithelium, or multiple layers, called stratified epithelium.Connective tissue supports and connects other tissues. Its cells lie within an extracellular matrix that may be fluid, as in blood; flexible, as in arteries; or rigid, as in bone.Muscle tissue helps the body move. Its cells contain proteins that slide past each other to shorten the cell.There are three types of muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle attaches to bones and allows voluntary movement. Smooth muscle lines internal organs and controls involuntary movement. Cardiac muscle forms the heart and contracts rhythmically to pump blood.Nervous tissue includes neurons that transmit electrical signals in response to stimuli, helping coordinate body activities, along with supporting cells, such as Schwann cells, that help maintain and support neuronal function.In multicellular organisms, tissues combine to form organs, and organs work together in body systems.For example, in the stomach, epithelial cells secrete digestive enzymes. Connective tissue beneath them contains blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen. Smooth muscle tissue contracts to churn and mix food. Nervous tissue controls these muscle contractions and regulates secretion. Together, these tissues enable the stomach to digest efficiently.

<h4>Epithelial Tissue</h4>

Epithelial tissue consists of thin sheets of cells and includes the skin and the linings of internal organs and body cavities. Epithelial cells are tightly packed, providing a barrier against injury, infection, and water loss. Epithelial tissue can be a single layer called simple epithelium, or multiple layers called stratified epithelium. In stratified epithelium, such as the skin, the outer cells&#x2014;which are subject to damage&#x2014;are replaced through the division of cells underneath. Epithelial cells have a variety of shapes, including squamous (flattened), cuboid, and columnar. Some epithelial tissues absorb or secrete substances, such as the lining of the intestines.

<h4>Connective Tissue</h4>

Connective tissue is composed of cells within an extracellular matrix and includes loose connective tissue, fibrous connective tissue, adipose (fat) tissue, cartilage, bone, and blood. Although the characteristics of connective tissue vary greatly, their general function is to support and attach multiple tissues. For example, tendons are made of fibrous connective tissue and attach muscle to bone. Blood transports oxygen, nutrients and waste products, and exerts immune functions, to support the needs of other tissues.

<h4>Muscle Tissue</h4>

Muscle tissue consists of groups of long, thin muscle cells&#x2014;called muscle fibers. Muscle cells can contract and expand, allowing the body and internal organs to move. The main types of muscle tissue are the cardiac muscle of the heart; the skeletal muscles that attach to bones, such as the limb muscles; and smooth muscle found in visceral organs such as the intestines.

<h4>Nervous Tissue</h4>

Nervous tissue is composed of neurons&#x2014;specialized cells that send, transport, and receive information through electrochemical signaling&#x2014;and supporting cells called glial cells. A bundle of neurons is a nerve. A brain is the concentration of nervous tissue. Besides controlling movement through the muscles, nervous tissue detects sensory stimuli and is responsible for directing many of the activities of the body.

Body tissues are groups of cells with similar structure and function. When different tissues work together, they form an organ with a specialized job. Vertebrates have four main tissue types: epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue.

Epithelial tissue is made of thin sheets of cells. It covers the skin and lines internal organs and body cavities. These cells are tightly packed, so they help protect against injury, infection, and water loss. Epithelial tissue may be simple, with one cell layer, or stratified, with several layers. In stratified epithelium, such as the skin, damaged outer cells are replaced by cells dividing underneath. Epithelial cells also come in different shapes, including squamous, cuboid, and columnar. Some epithelial tissues absorb or secrete substances, such as the lining of the intestines.

Connective tissue contains cells in an extracellular matrix, which is the material around the cells. It includes loose connective tissue, fibrous connective tissue, adipose tissue, cartilage, bone, and blood. Its main role is to support and attach tissues. Tendons are one example of fibrous connective tissue. They connect muscle to bone. Blood is also a connective tissue. It transports oxygen, nutrients, and waste products, and it has immune functions that support other tissues.

Muscle tissue is made of long, thin muscle cells called muscle fibers. These cells can contract and expand, which lets the body and internal organs move.
