La Prima Legge della Termodinamica afferma che l'energia non può essere creata o distrutta, solo trasformata. Questo può essere dimostrato all'interno di una classica rete alimentare dove l'energia luminosa del sole viene sfruttata come energia radiante dalle piante, convertita in energia chimica e immagazzinata come carboidrati complessi. La vegetazione viene poi consumata dagli animali e durante il processo di digestione, gli zuccheri rilasciano energia come calore. Gli zuccheri producono anche energia chimica che viene consumata facendo il lavoro, immagazzinata in macromolecole come glicogeno e acidi grassi o sono consumati da un predatore. I prodotti di scarto e la materia organica morta degli animali vengono poi decomposti da batteri e funghi e restituiti al suolo per fornire cibo per la crescita delle piante e il ciclo continua.

Durante il processo di fotosintesi, i fotoni vengono utilizzati per fare carboidrati complessi che le piante usano per vivere e crescere, e l'ossigeno viene rilasciato nell'atmosfera.

Le piante alla fine diventano cibo per gli animali, erbivori, e durante il processo di digestione, gli zuccheri vengono scomposti e l'energia viene rilasciata, sia come calore che per fornire energia chimica dal glucosio, per guidare processi cellulari che permettono all'animale di sopravvivere e riprodursi. Energy flow in a food web shows the First Law of Thermodynamics in action. Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form as it moves through living things and the environment.

Sunlight is the starting point. Plants capture radiant energy from the sun during photosynthesis and turn it into chemical energy stored in complex carbohydrates. At the same time, oxygen is released into the atmosphere.

Herbivores eat the plants and use those sugars during digestion. The energy is released as heat or used as chemical energy from glucose to power cellular processes that help the animal survive and reproduce. Some of that energy is also stored in macromolecules. Glycogen can be kept in the liver or muscles and used quickly when energy demand is high. Energy can also be stored as fatty acids.

That stored energy can then move to a predator, such as a carnivore, which uses it in a similar way. Waste products and dead organic matter from animals are broken down by decomposers like bacteria and fungi. The materials return to the soil, air, or water, and plants can use them again as the food web continues.
