Trophic Levels

nutrendosi di serpenti,

che a loro volta si possono
nutrire di uccelli granivori.

I decompositori, quali
funghi, batteri e detritivori

costituiscono il livello trofico finale.

Essi si nutrono dei resti

punto della catena alimentare.

livelli trofici

Tutti gli organismi in un ecosistema occupano un livello trofico nella catena alimentare. Il livello più basso è costituito da produttori primari, che sintetizzano il loro cibo dall'energia solare o chimica. Ogni livello successivo ottiene energia dai livelli sottostanti. Detritivores può occupare uno qualsiasi dei livelli al di sopra dei produttori primari.

<h4>Catene alimentari</h4>

All'interno di un ecosistema, l'energia e le sostanze nutritive scorrono attraverso gli organismi in ordine sequenziale noto come catena alimentare. Ogni organismo occupa un livello trofico o un luogo specifico all'interno di quella catena alimentare. Il livello trofico più basso è costituito da organismi autotrofici. Gli organismi autotrofi sintetizzano il loro cibo trasformando l'energia da sostanze chimiche, chemoautotrofi o dal sole, fotoautotrofi. Gli organismi nei livelli successivi, eterotrofi, ottengono energia da altri organismi nei livelli sottostanti. Il secondo livello trofico comprende i consumatori primari, gli erbivori, che consumano autotrofi, i produttori primari, mentre il terzo e il quarto livello sono costituiti da consumatori secondari e terziari, i carnivori. I predatori dell'apice occupano il livello trofico superiore di questa catena. Decompositori, o detritivori, di solito batteri o funghi che consumano organismi morti, possono esistere a qualsiasi livello eterofico e svolgere un ruolo fondamentale nel riciclaggio dei nutrienti e della materia nell'ecosistema. Questi organismi secernono enzimi digestivi che scompongono il materiale organico, convertendolo in composti inorganici che possono essere utilizzati di nuovo dai produttori primari.

<h4>Reti trofiche /h4>

Le catene alimentari non sempre rappresentano con precisione le interazioni tra le specie in un ecosistema. Predatori e prede possono esistere a più livelli trofici. Una rete alimentare/trofica, un modello olistico in cui vengono prese in considerazione tutte le interazioni, può rappresentare meglio la complessità delle relazioni in un ecosistema.

Food chains show how energy and nutrients move through an ecosystem. Each organism holds a trophic level, or a specific place in that chain. The lowest level includes primary producers, which make their own food using energy from the sun or from chemicals.

Organisms at the next levels are heterotrophs, which get energy from other organisms below them. Primary consumers are herbivores, and they feed on autotrophs, also called primary producers. Secondary and tertiary consumers are carnivores that occupy the third and fourth trophic levels. Apex predators sit at the top of the chain.

Detritivores, also called decomposers, can live at any heterotrophic level. They are usually bacteria or fungi that feed on dead organisms. They release digestive enzymes that break down organic material into inorganic compounds. Primary producers can use these compounds again, so detritivores help recycle nutrients and matter in the ecosystem.

Food chains do not always show every interaction in an ecosystem. Predators and prey can be part of more than one trophic level. A food web gives a more complete picture because it includes all of these connections. It shows the complex relationships among species more clearly than a single food chain.
