The Phosphorus Cycle

- [Narratore] Nel ciclo del fosforo,

gli atomi di fosforo esistono
inizialmente nella roccia,

non in stato gassoso.

laghi e acque freatiche.

Piante e alghe utilizzano
questi fosfati inorganici liberi

A differenza del carbonio, dell'acqua e dell'azoto, il fosforo non è presente nell'atmosfera come gas. Invece, la maggior parte del fosforo nell'ecosistema esiste come composti, come gli ioni fosfati (PO43-), trovati nel suolo, nell'acqua, nei sedimenti e nelle rocce. Il fosforo è spesso un nutriente limitante (cioè scarseggia). Di conseguenza, il fosforo viene aggiunto alla maggior parte dei fertilizzanti agricoli, che possono causare problemi ambientali legati al deflusso negli ecosistemi acquatici.

<h4>Ciclo biologico del fosforo</h4>

Il fosforo è presente in molte importanti strutture biologiche, come il DNA, le membrane cellulari, le ossa e i denti. Non è presente nell'atmosfera in forma gassosa, ma si trova in minerali, sedimenti, ceneri vulcaniche e aerosol. Il deflusso naturale può trasportare fosfati nei fiumi, nei laghi e nell'oceano, dove possono essere ingeriti da organismi acquatici. Quando gli organismi acquatici muoiono o espellere i rifiuti, i composti contenenti fosforo possono affondare sul fondo dell'oceano e formare infine strati sedimentari. Nel corso di migliaia di anni, l'elevazione geologica può restituire rocce contenenti fosforo dall'oceano alla terra.

<h4>Impatti umani sul ciclo del fosforo</h4>

Phosphorus moves through ecosystems mostly as phosphate ions in soil, water, sediment, and rocks. Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, it is not found in the atmosphere as a gas. It is also often a limiting nutrient, which means it is in short supply in many environments.

Phosphorus is important in DNA, cell membranes, bones, and teeth. It is found in minerals, sediment, volcanic ash, and aerosols. As rocks and sediment weather over time, they release inorganic phosphate. That phosphate then moves into soil and surface water.

Plants absorb phosphate and build it into organic molecules. Animals get phosphorus by eating plants and other animals. When plants and animals die or excrete waste, organic phosphates return to the soil. Bacteria break them down through phosphate mineralization and convert them back into inorganic forms that plants can use again.

Runoff can carry phosphates into rivers, lakes, and the ocean. Aquatic organisms can take in this phosphorus. When they die or excrete waste, phosphorus-containing compounds may sink to the ocean floor and form sediment layers. Over thousands of years, geological uplift can bring phosphorus-rich rocks back onto land.

Human activity also affects the phosphorus cycle. Farmers add phosphorus to fertilizers because it can limit plant growth and crop yield. But fertilizer runoff can reach aquatic ecosystems. There, it can trigger rapid growth of aquatic producers and create environmental problems.
