Subatomic Particles

La scoperta dell'elettrone

Il primo indizio sulla struttura subatomica arrivò alla fine del XIX secolo quando J.J. Thomson scoprì l'elettrone utilizzando un tubo a raggi catodici. Questo apparecchio era costituito da un tubo di vetro sigillato, dal quale era stata rimossa quasi tutta l'aria, e che conteneva due elettrodi metallici. Quando veniva applicata l'alta tensione agli elettrodi, tra di loro appariva un raggio visibile chiamato raggio catodico. La particella del raggio catodico di Thomson è un elettrone, una particella subatomica carica negativamente con una massa più di 1000 volte inferiore a quella di un atomo. Il termine “elettrone” fu coniato nel 1891 dal fisico irlandese George Stoney, da “ione elettrico”.

Nel 1909, Robert A. Millikan calcolò la carica di un elettrone mediante i suoi esperimenti sulla “goccia d'olio”. Millikan creò microscopiche goccioline di olio, che potevano essere caricate elettricamente per attrito mentre si formavano o utilizzando i raggi X. Queste goccioline inizialmente cadevano a causa della gravità, ma il loro progresso verso il basso poteva essere rallentato o addirittura invertito da un campo elettrico situato più in basso nell'apparecchio. Regolando l'intensità del campo elettrico ed effettuando misurazioni accurate e calcoli appropriati, Millikan fu in grado di determinare che la carica sulle singole gocce era 1,6 × 10^-19 C (coulomb). Millikan concluse che questo valore doveva quindi essere la carica fondamentale di un singolo elettrone. Poiché la carica di un elettrone era ormai nota grazie alla ricerca di Millikan, e il rapporto carica/massa era già noto grazie alla ricerca di Thomson (1,759 ×10^11 C/kg), la massa dell'elettrone fu scoperto essere 9,107 ×10 ^-31 chilogrammi.

Il modello nucleare di Rutherford

Nel 1904, Thomson propose il modello atomico del “plum pudding”, che descriveva una massa caricata positivamente con una uguale quantità di carica negativa sotto forma di elettroni incorporati in essa, poiché tutti gli atomi sono elettricamente neutri. Un modello concorrente era stato proposto nel 1903 da Hantaro Nagaoka, che postulò un atomo simile a Saturno, costituito da una sfera carica positivamente circondata da un alone di elettroni.

Il successivo importante sviluppo nella comprensione dell'atomo venne da Ernest Rutherford. Ha eseguito una serie di esperimenti utilizzando un raggio di particelle alfa (particelle α) ad alta velocità e caricate positivamente prodotte dal decadimento radioattivo del radio. Puntò un raggio di particelle α su un pezzo molto sottile di lamina d'oro ed esaminò la risultante dispersione delle particelle α utilizzando uno schermo luminescente che si illuminava brevemente quando veniva colpito da una particella α. Osservò che la maggior parte delle particelle passava attraverso la lamina senza essere affatto deviata. Tuttavia, alcuni sono stati deviati leggermente, e un numero molto piccolo è stato deviato quasi direttamente verso la fonte.

Da ciò Rutherford dedusse quanto segue: poiché la maggior parte delle particelle α in rapido movimento sono passate attraverso gli atomi d'oro senza essere deviate, devono aver viaggiato attraverso uno spazio essenzialmente vuoto all'interno dell'atomo. Le particelle alfa sono caricate positivamente, quindi le deflessioni si verificano quando incontrano un'altra carica positiva (cariche simili si respingono a vicenda). Poiché cariche simili si respingono a vicenda, le poche particelle α con carica positiva che hanno cambiato bruscamente percorso devono aver colpito, o essersi avvicinate, un altro corpo che aveva anch'esso una carica positiva altamente concentrata. Poiché le deflessioni si verificavano solo in una piccola frazione di tempo, questa carica occupava solo una piccola quantità di spazio nella lamina d'oro.

Analizzando una serie di esperimenti, Rutherford trasse due importanti conclusioni:

<ol>
	<li>Il volume occupato da un atomo deve essere costituito da una grande quantità di spazio vuoto.</li>
	<li>Al centro di ciascun atomo deve trovarsi un corpo piccolo, relativamente pesante e carico positivamente, il nucleo.</li>
</ol>

Quest’analisi portò Rutherford a proporre un modello in cui un atomo è costituito da un nucleo molto piccolo, carico positivamente, in cui è concentrata la maggior parte della massa dell'atomo, circondato dagli elettroni caricati negativamente in modo che l'atomo sia elettricamente neutro. Dopo molti altri esperimenti, Rutherford scoprì anche che i nuclei di altri elementi contengono il nucleo di idrogeno come “mattone costitutivo” e chiamò questa particella più fondamentale protone, la particella subatomica con carica positiva che si trova nel nucleo.

La struttura di un atomo

I protoni si trovano nel nucleo di un atomo e hanno una carica positiva. Il numero di protoni è uguale al numero atomico sulla tavola periodica e determina l'identità dell'elemento. Nel nucleo si trovano anche neutroni: non hanno carica, ma hanno la stessa massa dei protoni e quindi contribuiscono alla massa atomica di un atomo. Gli elettroni orbitano attorno al nucleo in nuvole. Hanno carica negativa e massa trascurabile, quindi contribuiscono alla carica complessiva di un atomo, ma non alla sua massa.

Neutroni

Si sapeva che il nucleo conteneva quasi tutta la massa di un atomo, mentre il numero di protoni forniva solo la metà, o meno, di quella massa. Furono avanzate diverse proposte per spiegare cosa costituisse la massa rimanente, inclusa l'esistenza di particelle neutre nel nucleo. Fu solo nel 1932 che James Chadwick trovò prove dell'esistenza di neutroni, particelle subatomiche prive di carica con una massa approssimativamente uguale a quella dei protoni.

L'esistenza del neutrone spiega anche gli isotopi: differiscono in massa perché hanno un diverso numero di neutroni, ma sono chimicamente identici perché hanno lo stesso numero di protoni.

Unità di massa atomica (amu) e unità fondamentale di carica (e)

Il nucleo contiene la maggior parte della massa di un atomo perché protoni e neutroni sono molto più pesanti degli elettroni, mentre gli elettroni occupano quasi tutto il volume di un atomo. Il diametro di un atomo è dell'ordine di 10^-10 m, mentre il diametro del nucleo è di circa 10^-15 m, circa 100.000 volte più piccolo. Gli atomi (e i protoni, i neutroni e gli elettroni che li compongono) sono estremamente piccoli. Ad esempio, un atomo di carbonio pesa meno di 2 ×10^−23 g e un elettrone ha una carica inferiore a 2 ×10^-19 C. Quando si descrivono le proprietà di oggetti minuscoli come gli atomi, servono delle unità di misura adeguatamente piccole, e vengono utilizzate le unità di massa atomica (amu) e l'unità fondamentale di carica (e). L'amu è definita rispetto all'isotopo più abbondante del carbonio, ai cui atomi viene assegnata una massa pari esattamente a 12 amu. Pertanto, un amu è esattamente 1/12 della massa di un atomo di carbonio-12: 1 amu = 1,6605 ×10^−24 g. Il Dalton (Da) e l'unità di massa atomica unificata (u) sono unità alternative equivalenti all'amu.

L'unità fondamentale della carica (chiamata anche carica elementare) equivale all'entità della carica di un elettrone con e = 1,602 ×10^-19 C. Un protone ha una massa di 1,0073 amu e una carica di 1+. Un neutrone è una particella leggermente più pesante con una massa di 1,0087 amu e una carica pari a zero; come suggerisce il nome, è neutrale. L'elettrone ha una carica 1− ed è una particella molto più leggera con una massa di circa 0,00055 amu. Per riferimento, ci vorrebbero circa 1800 elettroni per eguagliare la massa di un protone. Atomic structure is built from three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. Atoms make up all matter, and these particles explain an atom’s mass and charge.

The electron was first identified at the end of the 19th century by J.J. Thomson. He used a cathode ray tube, a sealed glass tube with almost all the air removed and two metal electrodes. When high voltage was applied, a visible beam called a cathode ray formed. The beam bent toward positive charge and away from negative charge. It also behaved the same way no matter which metal was used. In related experiments, a magnetic field also deflected the ray. Thomson used these results to calculate a charge-to-mass ratio and showed that the particles were much lighter than atoms. He concluded that the particles were negatively charged, smaller than atoms, and present in all atoms. That particle is now called the electron.

Robert A. Millikan later measured the charge of the electron with his oil drop experiments in 1909. He made tiny oil droplets that could gain charge from friction or X-rays. Gravity pulled the droplets downward, but an electric field could slow them or reverse their motion. From careful measurements, Millikan found a charge of 1.6 × 10−19 C for a single drop. He concluded that this was the charge of one electron. With Thomson’s charge-to-mass ratio and Millikan’s charge value, the mass of the electron was calculated to be 9.107 × 10−31 kg.

These discoveries showed that Dalton’s atom was not indivisible. Scientists also explored how positive charge is arranged in the atom. Thomson proposed the plum pudding model in 1904, where electrons were embedded in a positively charged mass. In 1903, Hantaro Nagaoka suggested a Saturn-like atom with electrons around a positive sphere. Ernest Rutherford later tested the atom with alpha particle scattering. He aimed fast, positively charged alpha particles at thin gold foil and observed them with a glowing screen. Most particles passed through without deflection. Some were turned slightly, and a very small number bounced almost straight back. Rutherford concluded that atoms contain a lot of empty space and that a small, heavy, positively charged nucleus sits at the center.

Rutherford’s model placed most of an atom’s mass in the nucleus and the electrons around it so the atom stayed neutral. He also found that nuclei of other elements contain the hydrogen nucleus as a building block and named that particle the proton. Protons have a positive charge and are found in the nucleus. The number of protons equals the atomic number on the periodic table and identifies the element. Neutrons are also in the nucleus. They have no charge but have about the same mass as protons, so they add to atomic mass. Electrons move in clouds around the nucleus. They have a negative charge and very little mass, so they affect charge more than mass.

James Chadwick provided evidence for neutrons in 1932. Neutrons are uncharged subatomic particles with a mass similar to protons. Their discovery helped explain isotopes. Isotopes have different masses because they have different numbers of neutrons, but they are chemically identical because they have the same number of protons.

Atoms are extremely small, so chemists use smaller units such as the atomic mass unit, or amu, and the fundamental unit of charge, e. The nucleus is about 100,000 times smaller in diameter than the atom, but it contains most of the mass because protons and neutrons are much heavier than electrons. One amu is defined as 1/12 of the mass of a carbon-12 atom, and 1 amu equals 1.6605 × 10−24 g. The fundamental charge equals the charge of an electron, 1.602 × 10−19 C. A proton has a mass of 1.0073 amu and a charge of 1+. A neutron has a mass of 1.0087 amu and a charge of 0. An electron has a mass of about 0.00055 amu and a charge of 1−. About 1800 electrons have the mass of one proton.
