Types of Genetic Transfer Between Organisms

Il trasferimento genetico avviene quando l'informazione genetica viene trasferita da un organismo all'altro. Esistono due tipi di trasferimento genetico:verticale e orizzontale. Il trasferimento genico verticale, il più comune dei due, è la trasmissione di informazioni genetiche da una generazione alla successiva.Il trasferimento genico verticale avviene in organismi che si riproducono sessualmente, trasferendo circa metà del DNA alla prole e in organismi che riproducono per via asessuata, dando vita a progenie geneticamente identiche. Il trasferimento genico orizzontale, al contrario, si verifica quando il materiale genetico di un organismo viene introdotto in un altro organismo della stessa generazione. Nel caso di alcune specie procariotiche, come i batteri, il trasferimento genico orizzontale può avvenire tra specie diverse.Il trasferimento genico orizzontale nei procarioti avviene attraverso tre meccanismi:trasformazione, trasduzione e coniugazione. Nella trasformazione, una cellula procariotica acquisisce il DNA nudo dall'ambiente. Durante la trasduzione, virus batteriofagi, ad esempio, degradano il DNA ospite.Piccole lunghezze del DNA ospite possono essere impacchettate nella progenie dei batteriofagi prima che la cellula ospite lisi. La progenie virale potrà così infettare altre cellule batteriche, diventando mediatori involontari della trasduzione. Nella coniugazione, il DNA viene trasferito direttamente da una cellula ad un'altra attraverso una struttura chiamata pilus sessuale.La coniugazione è una forma di accoppiamento per gli organismi che si riproducono in modo asessuale, ma non è vera riproduzione sessuale, perché non c'è scambio di gameti nè prole derivata. Ciascuno di questi meccanismi può essere osservato in natura ed ha applicazioni in laboratorio;la coniugazione, per esempio, può essere usata per transferire la resistenza antibiotica da un ceppo batterico ad un altro, risultando in ceppi che possono essere resistenti a più antibiotici.

Il trasferimento genetico avviene quando l’informazione genetica viene trasmessa da un organismo a un altro. Si ottiene attraverso due meccanismi: trasferimento genico verticale e trasferimento genico orizzontale. Il trasferimento genico verticale avviene quando l’informazione genetica viene trasferita da una generazione a quella successiva, cosa che avviene molto più frequentemente del trasferimento genico orizzontale. Sia la riproduzione sessuale che quella asessuata sono forme di trasferimento genico verticale, in cui uno o più organismi trasmettono parte del o tutto il loro genoma alla progenie. Inoltre, il trasferimento genico verticale avviene sia nelle specie procariotiche che eucariotiche.

Il trasferimento genico orizzontale si verifica quando l'informazione genetica viene trasmessa a un membro della stessa generazione e avviene più frequentemente nelle specie procariotiche. Mentre il trasferimento genico orizzontale tra specie è estremamente raro tra gli eucarioti, si verifica invece frequentemente nei procarioti. Il trasferimento genico orizzontale tra specie diverse è una fonte significativa di diversità genetica tra i procarioti.

La maggior parte delle specie procariotiche si riproducono asessualmente. Se da un lato ciò consenta una produzione più rapida della prole, dall’altro la progenie possiede una diversità genetica limitata. Il trasferimento genico orizzontale, quindi, svolge un ruolo vitale nell’introduzione della diversità genetica nei procarioti. Attraverso il trasferimento genico orizzontale, i procarioti possono condividere una piccola frazione del loro genoma con altri organismi, sia conspecifici (della stessa specie) che allospecifici (di specie diversa), nella stessa generazione. Molti scienziati ipotizzano che il trasferimento genico orizzontale e la mutazione siano le fonti più significative di variazione genetica nei procarioti. Pertanto, il trasferimento genico orizzontale fornisce parte della materia prima su cui agisce la selezione naturale.

Un esempio lampante di ciò è la comparsa di ceppi batterici resistenti agli antibiotici. I geni che conferiscono resistenza a un antibiotico possono essere trasferiti tra diverse specie e ceppi di batteri, conferendo ai batteri riceventi un vantaggio selettivo, come i ceppi resistenti alla penicillina di Neisseria gonorrhoeae, che causa la gonorrea. Su una scala ancora più ampia, alcune stime suggeriscono che almeno il 18% del genoma di E. coli sia stato acquisito tramite trasferimento genico orizzontale nel corso di milioni di anni di evoluzione.

Genetic transfer is the movement of genetic information from one organism to another. It happens in two main ways: vertical gene transfer and horizontal gene transfer. Vertical gene transfer moves genes from one generation to the next. It is much more common than horizontal gene transfer.

Vertical gene transfer happens during both sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction. In both cases, one or more organisms pass some or all of their genome to their offspring. This kind of transfer occurs in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic species. It explains how traits are passed down through generations.

Horizontal gene transfer moves genetic information to a member of the same generation. It happens most often in prokaryotic species. In eukaryotes, transfer between different species is very rare, but in prokaryotes it occurs frequently. This makes horizontal gene transfer an important source of genetic diversity among prokaryotes.

Most prokaryotic species reproduce asexually. This helps them make offspring quickly, but the offspring have limited genetic diversity. Horizontal gene transfer helps add new genetic variation. Scientists think that horizontal gene transfer and mutation are two of the biggest sources of genetic variation in prokaryotes, and this variation provides raw material for natural selection.

A clear example is antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Genes that give resistance to an antibiotic can move between different species and strains of bacteria. This can give the receiving bacteria a selective advantage. Penicillin-resistant strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, which causes gonorrhea, are one example. Over millions of years, some estimates suggest that at least 18% of the E. coli genome was acquired through horizontal gene transfer.
