Un pedigree è un diagramma che mostra la storia di un tratto di una famiglia. I tratti dominanti sono distribuiti in modo diverso rispetto ai tratti recessivi. L'eredità è distinta anche per i tratti determinati dai geni sui cromosomi sessuali rispetto ai tratti legati agli autosomi (cromosomi non sessuali). Le lentiggini e il polidattilo (dita o dita extra) sono tratti dominanti autosomici negli esseri umani, che richiedono solo una copia dell'allele determinante per influenzare il fenotipo. Le malattie dominanti autosomiche, come la Malattia di Huntington, affliggono il 50% della prole con un genitore affetto.
