The Y Chromosome Determines Maleness

Ci sono due cromosomi sessuali negli esseri umani: X e Y.
Il cromosoma Y determina il sesso maschile ed è il cromosoma più piccolo del genoma umano.
Ci sono tre regioni nel cromosoma Y: la porzione pseudoautosomica, che è ulteriormente divisa in due regioni - PAR1 e PAR2, la regione eterocromatica e la regione eucromatica.
Il gene S-R-Y si trova nella regione eucromatica del cromosoma Y. Svolge un ruolo fondamentale nello sviluppo dei feti maschili.
Quando un ovulo che porta un cromosoma X si fonde con uno spermatozoo che porta un cromosoma Y, forma uno zigote.
Lo zigote poi si divide continuamente per formare un embrione. In questa fase, gli embrioni maschili e femminili si sviluppano lungo lo stesso percorso e sono fisiologicamente identici.
Durante le prime fasi dello sviluppo, l'embrione ha due organi precursori: il dotto di Wolff e il dotto di Muller.
Il dotto di Wolffi può differenziarsi in strutture genitali maschili e il dotto di Mulleriano può differenziarsi in strutture genitali femminili.
Nelle settimane successive alla fecondazione, il gene S-R-Y presente sul cromosoma Y viene trascritto e poi tradotto nella proteina S-R-Y. La proteina S-R-Y avvia lo sviluppo dei testicoli nel feto.
 La proteina S-R-Y agisce come fattore trascrizionale e si lega a siti specifici del DNA, attivando così la via di formazione dei testicoli.
Quindi, le gonadi iniziano a secernere diversi ormoni, tra cui l'ormone antimulleriano e il testosterone.
L'ormone antimulleriano inibisce lo sviluppo del dotto mulleriano.
Il testosterone, d'altra parte, avvia lo sviluppo del dotto di Wolff nei dotti deferenti, nei dotti eiaculatori e nelle vescicole seminali.
Se questa via viene interrotta e le gonadi non riescono a secernere testosterone e ormone antimulleriano, il dotto mulleriano si sviluppa negli organi riproduttivi femminili anche se il feto è genotipicamente XY.

Il cromosoma Y è un cromosoma sessuale presente in diversi vertebrati e mammiferi, compreso l'uomo. Oltre a 22 paia di autosomi, i maschi umani hanno un cromosoma X e un cromosoma Y. In questi organismi, la presenza o l'assenza del cromosoma Y determina lo sviluppo dei tratti maschili.

Evoluzione

Circa 300 milioni di anni fa i due cromosomi sessuali si separarono da due cromosomi autosomici identici. Nel corso del tempo, il cromosoma Y ha perso la maggior parte dei suoi geni, riducendosi di dimensioni. Oggi solo una piccola parte del cromosoma Y condivide la somiglianza di sequenza con il cromosoma X. Struttura

The Y chromosome is a sex chromosome that helps guide male development in humans and other vertebrates and mammals. Human males usually have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, along with 22 pairs of autosomes. In these organisms, the presence or absence of the Y chromosome influences whether male traits develop.

The Y chromosome evolved from an autosome about 300 million years ago, when two sex chromosomes began to diverge. Since then, it has lost most of its genes and become much smaller. Only a small region still shares sequence similarity with the X chromosome. A large study of Y chromosomes in eight mammals, including monkeys, mice, rats, bulls, opossums, chimpanzees, and humans, found 18 highly similar regions. Their long-term retention suggests that Y-linked genes remain important for mammalian survival.

The mammalian Y chromosome has three main regions. The pseudoautosomal regions match parts of the X chromosome and can undergo meiotic recombination, which means they can be inherited more like autosomes than sex-linked genes. The second region is the male-specific Y chromosome region, or MSY. It is a euchromatin region about 23 Mb long and contains few protein-coding genes, including SRY, a master regulator of maleness, and ZFY, which is required for spermatogenesis. The third region is heterochromatin, which contains many repetitive sequences.

Changes in the MSY region can have major effects on reproduction. Deletions in this region can disrupt sperm development and lead to male sterility. For example, deletions in the AZF gene on the long arm of the Y chromosome can cause azoospermia, a condition in which spermatozoa are not found in the male ejaculate. Deletions in specific MSY regions are also linked to testicular germ cell tumors, or TGCTs.
