Le molecole con trasmittanza del 100% non assorbono energia, quindi solo le molecole con valori di trasmittanza inferiori producono spettri infrarossi.
Lo spettro IR di un composto è il grafico dell'intensità o della percentuale di trasmittanza rispetto al numero d'onda, dove la percentuale di trasmittanza è l'ordinata e il numero d'onda è l'ascissa.
I segnali verso il basso su uno spettro indicano bande di assorbimento a frequenze specifiche in numeri d'onda. Ad esempio, nel decano, i picchi intorno a 3000, 1465 e 1375 cm-1, significano l'assorbimento di energia a queste frequenze.
I segnali a sinistra indicano radiazioni ad alta energia e ad alta frequenza, mentre quelli a destra denotano radiazioni a bassa energia e bassa frequenza.
Le bande di assorbimento corrispondenti alla maggior parte dei gruppi funzionali si trovano sopra i 1500 cm-1 nella regione diagnostica.
La regione inferiore a 1500 cm-1 è la regione dell'impronta digitale, dove ogni molecola mostra un modello distintivo. Ad esempio, l'1-butanolo e il 2-butanolo hanno gruppi funzionali simili ma bande di assorbimento diverse in questa regione.

IR Spectrum

Quando la radiazione infrarossa (o IR) attraversa una molecola, i legami si allungano o si piegano assorbendo la radiazione. Questo assorbimento crea lo spettro di assorbimento della molecola, che è il grafico della sua percentuale di trasmittanza rispetto al numero d'onda.

La trasmittanza viene definita come: il rapporto tra la potenza radiante che attraversa un campione e quella della sorgente della radiazione. Moltiplicando la trasmittanza per 100 si ottiene la percentuale di trasmittanza (%T), che varia tra il 100% (nessun assorbimento) e lo 0% (assorbimento completo). Quando l’IR attraversa una molecola, il 100% di trasmittanza indica che la molecola non ha assorbito energia. Al contrario, valori di percentuale di trasmittanza inferiori suggeriscono che la molecola ha assorbito energia, consentendoci così di ottenere lo spettro IR. Ogni picco rivolto verso il basso nello spettro è chiamato banda di assorbimento. Di solito, la posizione della banda di assorbimento nello spettro IR viene riportata usando i valori di numero d'onda o frequenza. Nello spettro IR, i valori del numero d'onda vanno dai 400 ai 4000 cm^-1.

Nello spettro IR, i segnali sul lato sinistro corrispondono a radiazioni aventi alta energia e frequenza più elevate, mentre quelli sul lato destro indicano radiazioni aventi bassa energia e bassa frequenza. In base alla forma e all'intensità, questi segnali sono classificati come forti, medi, deboli, ampi o acuti. Lo spettro IR può essere suddiviso in due regioni principali. La regione del gruppo funzionale o regione diagnostica è la porzione sinistra dei due terzi dello spettro. Le bande di assorbimento corrispondenti alla maggior parte dei gruppi funzionali possono essere osservate in quest'area. Il lato destro dello spettro viene denominato regione dell'impronta digitale. Simile all'impronta digitale degli individui, questa regione è unica per ogni composto. La regione diagnostica di uno spettro infrarosso è dominata dalle vibrazioni di allungamento del legame, mentre la regione dell'impronta digitale è caratterizzata da vibrazioni più complesse come l’oscillazione, la piegatura e la torsione del legame. Sebbene i due composti possano contenere lo stesso gruppo funzionale, mostreranno un modello unico nella regione dell'impronta digitale a causa delle differenze nel loro ambiente chimico.

Infrared (IR) spectroscopy shows how a molecule responds when IR radiation passes through it. The bonds in the molecule stretch or bend as they absorb that energy. This creates an absorption spectrum, which plots percent transmittance against wavenumber.

Transmittance is the ratio of radiant power that passes through a sample to the radiant power from the source. When transmittance is multiplied by 100, it becomes percent transmittance, or %T. %T ranges from 100% for no absorption to 0% for complete absorption. A 100% transmittance signal means the molecule has not absorbed energy, while lower %T values show that absorption has taken place.

The IR spectrum is usually read by looking at downward-pointing peaks called absorption bands. Their positions are reported with wavenumber or frequency values. In IR spectroscopy, wavenumber ranges from 400 to 4000 cm−1. Signals on the left side of the spectrum represent higher-energy, higher-frequency radiation, while signals on the right side represent lower-energy, lower-frequency radiation.

IR peaks are also described by their shape and intensity. They may be strong, medium, weak, broad, or sharp. The spectrum is divided into two main regions. The functional group region, also called the diagnostic region, is the left two-thirds of the spectrum. Most functional group bands appear there.

The right-hand side is the fingerprint region. Like a person’s fingerprint, it is unique to each compound. The diagnostic region mainly shows bond stretching vibrations. The fingerprint region includes more complex motions such as bond rocking, bending, and twisting. Even if two compounds share the same functional group, their fingerprint patterns can still differ because their chemical environments are not the same.
