Eukaryotic Compartmentalization

Le cellule eucariotiche contengono numerosi organelli legati alla membrana che consentono a specifiche funzioni cellulari di verificarsi in microambienti distinti, protetti dall'interno citoplasmatico e dall'ambiente extracellulare.
Ad esempio, i complessi di pori nucleari incorporati all'interno dell'involucro nucleare controllano il trasporto delle molecole dentro e fuori dal nucleo. Questo aiuta a mantenere condizioni controllate all'interno del nucleo per regolare i processi critici, come l'espressione genica.
Inoltre, alcune proteine richiedono un ambiente ossidativo e devono essere isolate dal citosol riduttivo. Tali proteine vengono prodotte e modificate chimicamente all'interno del reticolo endoplasmatico prima di essere trasportate alle loro destinazioni finali attraverso piccoli microcosmi chimici chiamati vescicole.
Altri organelli, come i perossisomi, forniscono protezione sequestrando gli enzimi che convertono i propri sottoprodotti tossici, come il perossido di idrogeno, in molecole innocue, come l'acqua.
Allo stesso modo, i lisosomi segregano gli enzimi digestivi che funzionano a un pH molto basso dal citosol.

Una delle caratteristiche distintive delle cellule eucariotiche è che contengono organelli legati alla membrana, come il nucleo e i mitocondri, che svolgono funzioni specializzate. Poiché le membrane biologiche sono permeabili solo selettivamente ai soluti, aiutano a creare un compartimento con condizioni controllate all'interno di un organello. Questi microambienti sono adattati alle funzioni specifiche degli organelli e aiutano a isolarli dal citosol circostante.

Ad esempio, i lisosomi nelle cellule animali mantengono un ambiente acido rispetto al citosol circostante. Questo aiuta gli enzimi lisosomiali a digerire i detriti cellulari. Allo stesso modo, la regolazione del pH all’interno dei mitocondri aiuta nella sintesi delle molecole energetiche.

Inoltre, alcune proteine richiedono un ambiente ossidativo per un corretto ripiegamento ed elaborazione, ma il citosol è generalmente riduttivo. Pertanto, queste proteine sono prodotte dai ribosomi nel reticolo endoplasmatico (RE), che mantiene l'ambiente necessario. Le proteine vengono poi trasportate alla loro destinazione finale all'interno della cellula attraverso vescicole legate alla membrana.

Il materiale genetico delle cellule eucariotiche è suddiviso in compartimenti all'interno del nucleo, circondato da una doppia membrana chiamata involucro nucleare. Piccoli pori nell'involucro controllano quali molecole o ioni possono entrare o uscire dal nucleo. Ad esempio, l’RNA messaggero (mRNA) esce dal nucleo attraverso questi pori per portare le istruzioni genetiche codificate nel DNA ai ribosomi, dove possono essere tradotte in proteine.

Pertanto, la compartimentazione consente l'esecuzione di molte funzioni diverse con maggiore efficienza all'interno della stessa cella concentrando i componenti richiesti in uno spazio ristretto e segregandoli dal resto della cella.

Eukaryotic cells keep their organelles separate so each part can do a specific job. Organelles such as the nucleus and mitochondria are surrounded by membranes. These membranes are selectively permeable, which means they control what enters and leaves. That control creates small internal environments with conditions suited to each organelle.

These controlled spaces help organelles work more efficiently. In animal cells, lysosomes keep an acidic environment that helps their enzymes digest cellular debris. Mitochondria also rely on pH control to help make energy molecules. Some proteins need an oxidizing environment to fold and process correctly, so they are made by ribosomes in the endoplasmic reticulum, or ER, instead of in the cytosol, which is usually reductive.

After proteins are made, membrane-bound vesicles move them to their final location in the cell. The nucleus also shows how compartmentalization supports cell function. It holds the cell’s genetic material inside a double membrane called the nuclear envelope. Small pores in this envelope control what can enter or leave, and messenger RNA, or mRNA, exits through these pores to carry DNA instructions to ribosomes for protein synthesis. By keeping key materials in the right place, compartmentalization lets one cell carry out many tasks at the same time.
