Animal and Plant Cell Structure

Sia le cellule vegetali che quelle animali sono eucariotiche. Il loro citoplasma contiene organelli legati alla membrana, come il nucleo, il reticolo endoplasmatico e i mitocondri.
Tuttavia, differiscono per struttura, modalità di nutrizione e funzioni.
Le cellule vegetali possono avere dimensioni comprese tra 10 e 100 micron e sono supportate principalmente da una parete cellulare e da un grande vacuolo centrale. Il vacuolo pieno d'acqua immagazzina i nutrienti e aiuta a mantenere la pressione del turgore per sostenere la forma cellulare.

struttura delle cellule animali e vegetali

Le cellule animali e vegetali differiscono non solo nella struttura, funzione e modalità di nutrizione, ma anche nel modo in cui si riproducono, si specializzano e si organizzano in strutture complesse.

Divisione cellulare

Sebbene sia le cellule vegetali che quelle animali si dividano per mitosi (per le cellule non gametiche) e meiosi (per le cellule gametiche), differiscono nelle specificità di questo processo. A differenza delle cellule animali, le cellule vegetali sono prive di centrosomi, organelli responsabili dell’organizzazione delle fibre del fuso e della segregazione dei cromosomi durante la divisione cellulare. Hanno invece un centro di organizzazione dei microtubuli (MTOC) che aiuta l'auto-assemblaggio dei tubuli che formano il fuso. La citocinesi nelle cellule vegetali si ottiene formando una placca cellulare, che si sviluppa dal centro della cellula verso la periferia. Tuttavia, nelle cellule animali flessibili, l'anello contrattile fa contrarre la membrana cellulare e stacca due cellule figlie.

Organizzazione cellulare

Le cellule vegetali hanno tipicamente una forma fissa, per lo più rettangolare, a causa della parete cellulare rigida costituita principalmente da cellulosa. Plant and animal cells differ in how they divide, organize into tissues, and specialize for different jobs. Both cell types divide by mitosis in non-gametic cells and by meiosis in gametic cells, but the details are not the same. These differences help explain how each cell type supports growth and reproduction.

During cell division, animal cells use centrosomes to organize spindle fibers and separate chromosomes. Plant cells do not have centrosomes. Instead, they use a microtubule-organizing center, or MTOC, which helps the spindle form by self-assembly. Plant cells also complete cytokinesis by building a cell plate from the center outward. In animal cells, a contractile ring tightens the cell membrane and pinches one cell into two daughter cells.

Plant cells usually keep a fixed, rectangular shape because of a rigid cell wall made mainly of cellulose. This wall gives plant tissues a simpler organization. Neighboring plant cells communicate and exchange molecules through plasmodesmata, which are junctions between cells. Animal cells do not have a cell wall, so they are smaller, more flexible, and can take many different shapes. Their tissues can also be highly complex, with many junctions and channels for cell-to-cell communication.

Cell specialization also shows clear differences between the two groups. Plant cells can become parenchyma, sclerenchyma, or collenchyma cells. Some plant cells are also specialized as xylem, phloem, or root hair cells. Animal cells show a wider range of forms and functions, from round, biconcave red blood cells that carry oxygen to star-shaped nerve cells that pass electrical signals.
