Usando i diagrammi di corpo libero è semplice risolvere problemi che coinvolgono le forze. Un diagramma di corpo libero è una rappresentazione che mostra tutte le forze esterne che agiscono su un oggetto o su un sistema. L'oggetto o il sistema è rappresentato da un singolo punto isolato (o corpo libero). Solo queste forze che agiscono su di esso e che si originano al di fuori dell'oggetto o del sistema (forze esterne) sono rappresentate. Free body diagrams show the external forces acting on an object or system. The object is drawn as a single isolated point, or free body, so the forces are easier to analyze. Only forces that come from outside the object or system are included. These forces are shown as vectors pointing away from the free body.

A person sitting on a chair is a simple example. The free-body diagram has two forces. The chair exerts an upward normal force, and gravity pulls downward with the weight.

A rocket sled on a horizontal surface gives a more detailed example. The system includes the sled, its rockets, and the rider, so forces between those parts are not shown. The diagram includes thrust in the positive x-direction, friction in the negative x-direction, the normal force in the positive y-direction, and weight in the negative y-direction.

Even when forces act in both directions, the vertical forces can cancel if there is no vertical acceleration. That leaves only the horizontal forces to solve, which turns the situation into a simpler one-dimensional problem. Directions are marked with plus or minus signs, with the right side taken as positive.

A skier on a slope shows how the same idea works on an incline. The normal force is drawn perpendicular to the slope, and friction acts parallel to the slope. The skier’s weight is split into two components, Wx and Wy, along the axes.
