La fluidodinamica si riferisce allo studio dei fluidi in movimento. Il movimento dei fluidi è rappresentato da vettori di velocità o linee di flusso.
Una moltitudine di vettori di velocità in diversi punti mostrano il movimento del fluido con frecce che ne rappresentano le grandezze e la direzione.
Le linee di flusso sono le curve ottenute tracciando la tangente al vettore di velocità istantanea in ogni punto del fluido.
Il flusso del fluido può essere laminare o turbolento. Nel flusso laminare, il fluido viaggia in strati lisci e paralleli, mentre nel flusso turbolento, il fluido viaggia in modo irregolare e il suo movimento cambia bruscamente e continuamente nel tempo.
Il modello di flusso del fluido dipende dalla velocità del flusso, dalla rugosità del percorso del flusso e dalla densità del fluido.
Un fiume che scorre attraverso una regione pianeggiante rappresenta il flusso laminare, ma quando un motoscafo lo attraversa, il suo flusso diventa turbolento formando vortici e onde.
Una fontana d'acqua mostra un flusso laminare a una velocità di flusso inferiore, tuttavia, a velocità maggiore, il suo flusso diventa turbolento.

Laminar and Turbulent Flow

Lo scorrimento del fluido può essere sia laminare che turbolento. Il flusso laminare (a volte descritto come un flusso costante) è rappresentato da linee di flusso lisce e parallele, mentre nel flusso turbolento, le linee di flusso sono irregolari e cambiano nel tempo. Nel flusso turbolento, i percorsi di scorrimento del fluido sono irregolari perché diverse parti del fluido si mescolano tra loro o formano piccole regioni circolari che assomigliano a vortici. Questo può verificarsi quando la velocità di un fluido raggiunge una determinata velocità critica.

Per esempio, il fumo sale dai bastoncini di incenso senza intoppi per un po' e poi inizia a formare mulinelli e vortici. Fluid dynamics studies fluids in motion. Scientists often use velocity vectors to show fluid motion in places like meteorology. For example, wind in the atmosphere can be mapped with vectors that show the speed and direction of the wind at each point.

Another way to show fluid motion is with a streamline. A streamline shows the path of a small volume of fluid as it flows. When the flow changes with time, the streamlines do not match the flow lines. The fluid velocity is always tangential to the streamline.

Fluid flow can be laminar or turbulent. Laminar flow, sometimes called steady flow, has smooth, parallel streamlines. Turbulent flow has irregular streamlines that change over time. In turbulent flow, parts of the fluid mix together, and small circular regions can form that look like whirlpools.

This change can happen when a fluid reaches a certain critical speed. Smoke from an incense stick often rises smoothly at first and then starts to form swirls and eddies. That smooth motion is laminar flow, while the swirls and eddies show turbulent flow. Blood flow in the human aorta is normally laminar, but a small disturbance, such as a heart pathology, can make it turbulent. Water from a faucet is also laminar at low speed and becomes turbulent at high speed.
