Equations of Wave Motion

Le onde possono essere descritte dal movimento e dalla posizione delle particelle del mezzo attraverso il quale si muovono.
Se rappresentiamo graficamente l'altezza verticale dell'onda alla sua posizione, vediamo che ogni particella nel mezzo oscilla su e giù in un semplice movimento armonico con la stessa frequenza.
La posizione di equilibrio dell'onda è lungo una linea retta ed è considerata l'asse x di un sistema di coordinate.
Consideriamo una particella del mezzo in cui si muove l'onda. Si sposta dalla posizione di equilibrio a una certa altezza nella direzione positiva e negativa dell'asse y in un periodo T. Il moto ondulatorio è sinusoidale e si traduce nella direzione x positiva con il passare del tempo.
Il valore dello spostamento delle particelle dalla posizione di equilibrio è una funzione sia della posizione che del tempo ed è noto come funzione d'onda.
I segni più e meno indicano se l'onda si muove rispettivamente nella direzione x negativa o positiva.

Matematicamente, il movimento di un'onda può essere studiato usando una funzione d'onda. Consideriamo una corda che oscilla su e giù in un moto armonico semplice, avendo un periodo T. L'onda nella corda è sinusoidale ed è si traduce nella direzione positiva x con il passare del tempo. Il seno è una funzione dell'angolo θ, oscillante tra +A e -A e che si ripete ogni 2π radianti. Per costruire un modello d'onda, è considerato il rapporto dell'angolo θ e della posizione x.

Dal rapporto, usando il valore di θ, e moltiplicando la funzione del seno con l'ampiezza A, possiamo modellare la posizione y della corda come una funzione di posizione x.

L'onda nella corda viaggia con una velocità costante e si muove ad una distanza uguale a vt nel tempo t, quindi possiamo modificare la funzione d'onda usando questo. Inoltre, moltiplicare per il termine 2π/λ semplifica l'equazione.

A wave on a string can be modeled with a wavefunction. The string moves up and down in simple harmonic motion and has a period T. As time passes, the sinusoidal wave shifts in the positive x-direction.

The sine function is used because it repeats every 2π radians and varies between +A and −A, where A is the amplitude. To describe the string’s y-position, the angle θ is related to position x. The sine function is then multiplied by amplitude A to build the wave model.

The model must also account for motion over time. Since the wave travels with constant velocity, it moves a distance equal to vt in time t. The equation is then modified by the factor 2π/λ, where λ is the wavelength. This leads to the wave number and the angular frequency, which adjust the first and second parts of the equation.

The reduced wavefunction describes a simple harmonic wave on a string. An initial phase angle φ is added to show the wave’s starting position just before motion begins. That phase helps determine different wave parameters.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
