Interference and Superposition of Waves

Quando due onde sono fisicamente presenti nella stessa posizione, la perturbazione risultante è una terza onda. Questo effetto è chiamato interferenza.
Matematicamente, l'interferenza può essere descritta dal principio di sovrapposizione. Afferma che se due o più onde si sovrappongono nello stesso punto, l'onda risultante è la somma algebrica delle singole onde.

Quando due onde della stessa natura si verificano simultaneamente nella stessa regione, provocano interferenze. L'interferenza delle onde implica che l'effetto netto delle onde è la somma degli effetti delle singole onde. Tuttavia, esso non implica che le singole onde influenzino la propagazione di altre onde.

L'interferenza avviene nelle onde meccaniche, come nelle onde sonore, o nelle onde su una corda, e nelle onde superficiali dell'acqua. Le onde meccaniche corrispondono allo spostamento fisico di particelle. Quindi, l'interferenza implica che lo spostamento fisico delle particelle di un mezzo sia dato dalla somma algebrica dello spostamento causato dalle singole onde. L'interferenza si verifica anche in altre onde come quelle elettromagnetiche in cui i campi elettrici e magnetici si sommano vettorialmente.

Comunque, il principio di sovrapposizione non si applica a certe onde. Vale a dire, che l'onda risultante potrebbe non essere una semplice somma algebrica delle singole onde. In questo caso, l'effetto non è lineare, complicando la descrizione di questo fenomeno. Queste onde sono dette essere onde non lineari.

Wave interference patterns form when two waves of the same nature occupy the same region at the same time. The combined effect is the sum of the individual wave effects. Interference does not mean that one wave changes how the other wave travels.

This idea applies to mechanical waves, including sound waves, waves on a string, and surface water waves. Mechanical waves move through a medium, so interference shows up as the algebraic sum of particle displacements in that medium. The same principle also applies to electromagnetic waves, where the electric and magnetic fields add together vectorially.

Not every wave follows simple superposition. For some waves, the result is not just a direct sum of the separate waves. These are nonlinear waves, and their behavior is harder to describe.

Interference can create alternating bands of constructive and destructive interference. These bands form an interference pattern, which is a clear sign that wave behavior is present in nature.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
