Propagation of Waves

Un'onda può propagarsi da un mezzo all'altro, ognuno con una densità diversa. In tal caso, l'onda incidente si propaga in parte e in parte viene riflessa.
La velocità di propagazione dell'onda sarebbe relativamente inferiore nel mezzo più denso rispetto al mezzo più raro.
Una quantità di indice di rifrazione confronta la velocità delle onde elettromagnetiche in diversi mezzi. È espresso come il rapporto tra la velocità della luce nel vuoto e la velocità della luce in un dato mezzo.

Quando un'onda si propaga da un mezzo all'altro, parte di essa potrebbe essere riflessa nel primo messo, e parte di essa può essere trasmessa nel secondo mezzo. In questo caso, l'interfaccia dei due mezzi può essere considerata come un confine che non è né fisso né libero.

Consideriamo uno scenario dove un'onda si propaga da una corda avente bassa densità di massa lineare ad una corda con un'alta densità di massa lineare. In questo caso, l'onda riflessa è fuori fase rispetto all'onda incidente. Sia l'onda riflessa che quella trasmessa hanno ampiezze minori di quella dell'onda incidente. Se la tensione è uguale in entrambe le corde, la velocità dell'onda è bassa nella corda con un'alta densità di massa lineare.

Al contrario, consideriamo la propagazione di onde da una corda con un'alta densità di massa lineare ad una con bassa densità di massa lineare. In questo caso, l'onda riflessa è in una fase rispetto all'onda incidente, così come l'onda trasmessa. Sia le onde riflesse che quelle trasmesse hanno ampiezze minori di quella dell'onda incidente.

Wave reflection and transmission happen when a wave moves from one medium to another. At the boundary, part of the wave can bounce back into the first medium, and part can pass into the second medium. The interface between the two media then acts like a boundary that is neither fixed nor free.

The wave behavior depends on the change in linear mass density of the strings. When a wave travels from a string with low linear mass density to a string with high linear mass density, the reflected wave is out of phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave stays in phase with the incident wave. In this case, both reflected and transmitted waves have smaller amplitudes than the incoming wave.

If the tension in both strings is the same, the wave speed is lower in the string with higher linear mass density. The opposite change gives a different phase result. When a wave moves from a string with high linear mass density to a string with low linear mass density, the reflected wave is in phase with the incident wave. The transmitted wave is also in phase, and both waves again have amplitudes smaller than the incident wave.

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.
