Standing Waves

Quando una corda tesa viene pizzicata, l'onda risultante vibra su e giù. Questo è prodotto dall'interferenza di due onde che viaggiano in direzioni opposte, aventi la stessa frequenza e ampiezza.

I punti in cui la funzione seno è zero hanno uno spostamento pari a zero e sono chiamati nodi.
I punti in cui la funzione sinusoidale è massima, per le onde in fase, corrispondono allo spostamento massimo. Questi punti sono chiamati antinodi.

Qualche volta le onde non sembrano muoversi; in realtà, esse vibrano sul posto. Le onde stazionarie possono essere viste sulla superficie di un bicchiere di latte lasciato in frigorifero, che è quindi un esempio di onde stazionarie. Le vibrazioni provenienti dal motore del frigo creano onde nel latte che oscilla su e giù ma che non sembra muoversi in superficie. Queste onde sono formate o create dal sovrapporsi di due o più onde identiche che si muovono in direzioni opposte. Wave interference in strings and air columns can create standing waves that seem to vibrate in place. A standing wave may appear on the surface of a glass of milk kept in a refrigerator. The refrigerator motor sends vibrations into the milk, and the wave moves up and down without seeming to travel across the surface.

Standing waves form when two or more identical moving waves travel in opposite directions. As the waves pass through each other, their disturbances add together. When the waves have the same amplitude and wavelength, the pattern alternates between constructive interference and destructive interference at fixed points in space.

The result is a waveform that looks stationary, so it is called a standing wave. Plucked musical strings, such as guitar strings, and blown organ pipes can also produce standing waves. In these cases, reflections from the ends of the string or the pipe help create the pattern.

Standing waves have nodes and antinodes. Nodes are points where the string does not move, or where the wave disturbance is zero. The fixed ends of a string must also be nodes because the string cannot move there. Antinodes are the points of maximum amplitude in the standing wave.

Mechanical Waves in Air, Water, and Earth

Mechanical waves carry a disturbance through a medium. They repeat periodically and are often linked with simple harmonic motion. These waves follow Newton's laws and need a material medium to move through. A medium is the substance that carries the wave and provides an elastic restoring force when it is deformed. Water waves, sound waves, and seismic waves are examples of mechanical waves. In water waves, water is the medium. In sound waves, the medium is usually air, but it can also be water.

Wave motion can be described by a few key parameters. Simple mechanical waves repeat over several cycles and can be modeled with sine and cosine functions.
