What is a Frequency Distribution

Consider a group of 50 individuals participating in a marathon. Suppose the organizers of the marathon want to know how the number of participants varies with age.
To find out, the data are summarized using a frequency distribution table. It is a statistical tool that represents data divided among several categories or classes against the number of values for each class called the frequency.
Frequency tables help in understanding the occurrences and distribution of data in the data set.
For example, a frequency table helps in visualizing the distribution of students according to height.
Similarly, the pulse rate variation among a group of patients can be easily visualized using a frequency distribution table.

Una frequenza indica il numero di volte in cui ricorre ogni valore di una variabile. La somma di tutti i valori di frequenza rappresenta il numero totale di studenti inclusi nel campione. Viene comunemente utilizzato per raggruppare dati di tipo quantitativo. Le distribuzioni di frequenza possono essere visualizzate in una tabella, un istogramma, un grafico a linee, un diagramma a punti o un grafico a torta, solo per citarne alcuni. Un istogramma è una rappresentazione grafica delle frequenze tabulate, mostrate come rettangoli adiacenti, eretti su intervalli discreti (contenitori), con un'area pari alla frequenza delle osservazioni nell'intervallo. In una tabella di distribuzione della frequenza, i valori dei dati sono raggruppati in classi di uguale larghezza. I confini delle classi sono valori individuali scelti per separare le classi (spesso sono i punti intermedi tra i limiti superiori e inferiori delle classi adiacenti), mentre le osservazioni più piccole e quelle più grandi in ciascuna classe sono chiamate limiti di classe. Frequency distributions organize quantitative data by showing how often each value appears. A frequency is the number of times a data value occurs. When the frequency values are added together, the total equals the number of students in the sample.

These distributions are useful for grouping numerical data into clear patterns. They can be shown in a table, histogram, line graph, dot plot, or pie chart. A histogram displays tabulated frequencies as adjacent rectangles over discrete intervals, or bins. The area of each bar matches the frequency of the observations in that interval.

A frequency distribution table groups data values into classes of equal width. Class limits are the smallest and largest observations in each class. Class boundaries are the values used to separate neighboring classes, often at the midpoint between upper and lower class limits. In many cases, frequency distributions use 5 to 20 classes. The classes should have equal widths and should be mutually exclusive, continuous, and exhaustive.
