Histogram

Recall that frequency distribution tables help  organize quantitative data with several categories, such as the number of books at different price ranges.
Such frequency distribution tables can be visually represented using histograms, a graph that consists of bars of equal width drawn without gaps. 
The vertical axis represents the frequencies in each class, and the horizontal axis represents the class boundaries. 
So, what are class boundaries? The first interval in the data table shows the price ranging from 5 to 10 dollars, and the second interval offers  the price range from 11 to 16. 
Note that the price range between 10 and 11 is missing from the table. This gap is filled in by calculating their midpoints, called the class boundaries.
These class boundaries are represented on the horizontal axis and the corresponding frequencies on the vertical axis. The vertical bars, called bins, connect the class boundaries and frequency values.

Il vantaggio principale di un istogramma è che permette di visualizzare facilmente insiemi di dati di grandi dimensioni. Una regola pratica consiste nell'utilizzare un istogramma quando il set di dati è costituito da 100 valori o più. Per costruire un istogramma si può decidere quante barre o intervalli utilizzare, chiamati anche classi, per rappresentare i dati. Molti istogrammi sono costituiti da 5 fino a 15 barre o classi, ma è possibile scegliere il numero di barre in base all’esigenza.

A histogram shows how data is distributed in a data set. It uses an x-y graph to display the pattern of the data. The x-axis is labeled with what the data represents, such as distance from home to school. The y-axis shows frequency, relative frequency, percent frequency, or probability.

A histogram is made of adjoining bars. The height of each bar matches the frequency value for that class. Even with different labels, the graph keeps the same overall shape. Like a stemplot, a histogram can show the shape, center, and spread of the data.

Histograms are most useful for large, continuous, quantitative data sets. They can display large data sets clearly and quickly. A common rule of thumb is to use a histogram when a data set has 100 values or more.

To build a histogram, you choose how many bars or intervals, also called classes, will represent the data. Many histograms use five to 15 bars for clarity. The right number depends on the data and the level of detail needed.
