I composti carbonilici che contengono idrogeno al α al carbonio chirale, quando trattati con acidi o basi, subiscono racemizzazione attraverso la formazione di un enolo achirale.
Nel mezzo acido, la protonazione dell'ossigeno C=O e la successiva deprotonazione dell'atomo di α-carbonio si traduce in un enolo.
Nel mezzo basico, la deprotonazione dell'atomo di α-carbonio porta alla formazione di un intermedio di enolato achirale stabilizzato per risonanza.
Successivamente, la protonazione dell'enolato ossigeno genera l'enolo.
In entrambi i casi, poiché l'enolo formato è achirale, la riprotonazione può avvenire da entrambi i lati del piano del doppio legame con uguale probabilità.
Questo porta alla formazione di una miscela racemica, una con stereochimica trattenuta e l'altra con stereochimica invertita.

In alternativa, nel mezzo basico, la rimozione dell'idrogeno α genera un enolato stabilizzato per risonanza. Successivamente, la protonazione dell'ossigeno enolato dà un enolo. È da notare che la deprotonazione di un composto carbonilico per formare enolo è favorita quando i legami C(α)–H(α) e C=O sono perpendicolari tra loro, consentendo la sovrapposizione dell'orbitale σ e dell'orbitale π.

Poiché l'enol alchene ha una geometria planare, il protone elettrofilo in arrivo può attaccare la molecola sia dalla parte superiore sia da quella inferiore del piano con la stessa probabilità, risultando in una miscela racemica di enantiomeri. Racemization can happen when a carbonyl compound forms an enol. In these molecules, the chiral alpha-carbon is the stereocenter. When the molecule changes under acidic or basic conditions, the original chiral center can be lost.

In acidic solution, the carbonyl oxygen is protonated first. At the same time, the alpha-hydrogen is removed, and an enol forms. In basic solution, removal of the alpha-hydrogen gives a resonance-stabilized enolate. The enolate oxygen is then protonated to make an enol.

The change to an enol is favored when the C(alpha)–H(alpha) bond and the C=O bond are perpendicular. This arrangement allows overlap between a sigma orbital and a pi orbital. The enol alkene is planar, so an incoming electrophilic proton can attack from either the top or the bottom of the plane with equal chance.

Because either face can be attacked, a racemic mixture of enantiomers forms. In this mixture, one enantiomer keeps its stereochemistry, while the other is inverted. This is how enolization can erase and then remake stereochemical information at the alpha-carbon.
