Il volume respiratorio è la quantità di aria che un individuo inspira o espira, generalmente misurata in litri.
Cinque volumi respiratori fungono da importanti indicatori della salute respiratoria.
Il primo è il volume corrente, o TV, che è l'aria inspirata o espirata in un respiro. In genere, un adulto inala circa 500 millilitri di aria per respiro.
Il prossimo è il volume minuto, o MV, che misura l'aria inspirata ed espirata al minuto. Il valore MV normale varia da 5 a 8 litri.
Poi arriva il volume di riserva inspiratoria, o IRV, l'aria massima che un individuo può inalare in un solo respiro. Il valore medio di IRV è di circa 3000 millilitri.

Tidal volume (TV) is the air inhaled or exhaled in one normal breath. In adults, it is about 500 milliliters per breath. It serves as the baseline volume for resting breathing.

Minute volume (MV) is the total air exchanged through the lungs each minute. It is found by multiplying tidal volume by respiratory rate, which is the number of breaths taken per minute. Normal minute volume usually ranges from 5 to 8 liters per minute, depending on activity level and physiological condition. This value shows how much ventilation a person is achieving during normal activity and exercise.

Inspiratory reserve volume (IRV) is the extra air that can be inhaled after a normal breath in. The average IRV is about 3000 milliliters. Expiratory reserve volume (ERV) is the maximum air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal exhalation. It usually ranges from 1200 to 1500 milliliters. ERV helps measure how well the lungs can expel air, and it is often reduced in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.

Residual volume is the air left in the lungs after a forceful exhalation. It is typically between 1000 and 1200 milliliters. This air helps prevent lung collapse and supports continuous gas exchange between breaths. Changes in residual volume can point to restrictive or obstructive lung disease.

Spirometry is the most common way to measure respiratory volumes. In this pulmonary function test, a person breathes into a device that records air volume and flow during inhalation and exhalation. Spirometry helps diagnose asthma, COPD, and restrictive lung disease.
